Shop Assistant – Furniture Refinishing

We are a small, family run business (Mom and son team). Right now we have occasional help but we need someone 30+ hours a week to work with us. Preferably Monday through Friday 9am to 3:30pm with the potential to switch to 4 or 5 days a week (9-5pm) once you’re fully trained and can work independently.

We are looking for someone who is motivated to help grow the business, is a quick learner, and works hard. We need someone who is detail oriented, well organized, and good with their hands. The job is to assist in the restoration, refinishing, and repair of vintage mid-century modern furniture. Hopefully in a short period of time, you would be working on projects start to finish unassisted. There will be times when you will need to work independently while I am sourcing new inventory or picking up supplies. The job focuses mostly on stripping furniture, re-gluing, sanding, applying wipe-on and spray finishes. Along with organizing and keeping the workshop clean. Once (sometimes twice a week) we rearrange and clean the showroom.

This will require exposure within safe limits to solvents, water based and oil-based furniture finishes, glue, and contact cement. Personal protection equipment will be provided. Requires ability to safely lift 75+ pounds.

Valid divers license required. Must be able to assist with occasional pick-ups and deliveries of furniture.

Must be have experience with basic power and hand tools.

Preference given to individuals with experience and involvement in the art and design community

Our shop is a 10 minute walk from Jenkintown/Wyncote Train Station. #77 Bus stops right outside our door. Parking is available as well.

Candidate Personal Characteristics:

You are passionate about design/craftsmanship and enjoy working with your hands.

You are self-motivated and have a good sense of intuition, with an ability to anticipate next steps/needs while working on a project.

You have an excellent attention to detail and are well organized.

Pay:

$18 an hour to start. There will be an opportunity for pay raises as your skills and efficiency increase.

Job Type:

Hourly. Paid on the 15th and 30th. A full 8 hour day includes one hour paid break. 6.5 hour days include a 45 minute paid break. Breaks can be broken up through the day or taken all at once.

We are closed the week between Christmas and New Years. It is a paid vacation.

Job will start with a two-week trial period as a 1099. Then move into a W2 if both parties agree to continue working together.
