We opened a bookstore in North Philly on Germantown Avenue last year. It is still a bit shaky with some really slow days, but after a year it is showing signs of life and has grown to the point we could use some PART TIME help with all aspects of getting the store off the ground. At this point, that would involve a lot of promotional work, mostly putting up posters and distributing flyers. But there will be all kinds of work, especially if we expand the store, which is a distinct possibility right now, and promotional efforts are successful. There will also be some light carpentry and a lot of moving boxes and shelving books if the store expands.
You need to have some familiarity with what books are salable and desirable. I can teach most of this stuff, but you have to be not afraid to learnand unlearn stuff you think you know.
I've been trying to fil this job all summer and I hired several people who were really looking for a full time job, and we got a few weeks into projects, and then I get a text they aren't showing up again because they got another job. This is a part time job, but it can build into a full time job if you give it time. But in the meantime, you'll need a way to support yourself. For the foreseeable future, this will be a 10-20 hour a week gig. Whoever I hire is going to have to convince me they'll stick with it and give the store a chance to grow.
