POSITION SUMMARYFreedom House Ambulance Service was the first emergency medical service in the United States to be staffed by paramedics with medical training beyond basic first aid. Founded in 1967 to serve the predominantly black residents in Pittsburgh's Hill District neighborhood, Freedom House was staffed entirely by African Americans. Their groundbreaking work became the basis for pre-hospita l training in the country. Now, Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services is re-vamping the Freedom House name. The new Pittsburgh EMS – Freedom House EMT Training Academy is a 12-week EMT Training program; during the program candidates will become nationally registered EMTs and gain valuable on the job training. Once completed, the trainee may obtain full-time employment as an EMT with the City of Pittsburgh. Department : Public Safety/Bureau of Emergency Medical Services Salary: $16 per hour. A current, valid Class C Pennsylvania Driver's License is required at the time of application and must be maintained throughout employment. POSITION DUTIESTraining Description:During the first six weeks, trainees will learn in a traditional classroom setting to prepare for the EMT National Registry Exam. Upon certification, learning will continue through on-the-job training (OJT) and mentoring by an experienced EMT. During the on-the-job training (weeks 7 through 12), candidates begin the hiring process for a full-time Emergency Medical Technician. This process includes:
Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) certification
Physical Agility Test
Comprehensive Background Investigation
Medical
Psychological Assessment
Schedule: During the first six (6) weeks of classroom training, all applicants are expected to attend classes Monday through Friday, daylight, forty (40) hours per week. Upon obtaining EMT Certification, the trainee will begin on-the-job training, (OJT), the OJT shifts will vary based on resources and demands of the Bureau. Shifts including daylight, evenings, weekends and special events coverage.Position Duties:
Attends and participates in Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS training classes daily.
Drives or accompanies driver in emergency medical vehicle to site of emergency as informed by dispatcher or District Chief.
Maintains radio or other contact as necessary with the Public Safety Dispatch, EMS Command Staff, EMS Physician, receiving hospitals, and other agencies as necessary. Follows the EMS Physician's instructions on medical treatment.
Administers treatment to ill or injured patients, accompanies patients to the hospital as a driver and or provides continued pre-hospital care to patient in the emergency medical vehicle.
Lifts and carries patients on stretchers from routine and difficult access areas.
Completes patient care reports and all other required documentation (signature forms, insurance forms, etc.) electronically and hard copy as required.
Maintains adequate stock of equipment and supplies; washes and disinfects medical equipment; washes and cleans emergency medical vehicles.
Works all shifts, weekends and holidays.
Ensures vehicles are in proper working order at all times; reports any vehicle malfunctions to District Chief.
Performs activities and functions of other personnel as assigned or required.
