This includes development of regional ground motions to conform to current professional practice, and characterization of site-specific ground motions for use in engineering analyses. May be asked to serve as technical liaison between TVA and other federal/state agencies (e.g., NRC or EPA) on matters of engineering geology and seismology.Utilizes expertise from seismology, geophysics, and engineering geology to: develop agency approaches to characterize seismic ground motions at TVA sites; advise internal business units regarding the impacts of regional geology and seismicity on the siting/evaluation of TVA facilities, including hydroelectric dams, nuclear generation facilities, and waste impoundments; lead subsurface exploration programs informing seepage and/or stability analyses of concrete dams, earthen dams, and impoundments; serve as subject matter expert regarding geology and seismicity during field inspections, potential failure modes analyses, and risk-based assessments for dam safety; critically review internal asset owners and stakeholders proposed modifications to existing dams and impoundments; interpret results of geologic investigations and geotechnical instrumentation for effects upon dam stability; advise dam asset owners or TVA Dam Safety Officer on geologic-related issues of importance at multiple levels varying from project-level to agency-level; participate in causal evaluations of dam safety incidents.May be asked to serve as technical team leader for projects involving assessments of seepage or dam stability. This may entail: providing scoping and technical direction to TVA and/or external (non-TVA) geologists and engineers executing work for site characterization and dam stability assessments; review work products of external agents related to dam stability assessments; leading technical efforts of a project team; monitoring performance of technical team toward project objectives; approving changes to project scopes to accommodate technical needs of project; and conducting reviews of lessons learned from project experience.In support of the Dam Safety Program, this individual: develops design guides and design criteria related to seismology and engineering geology; reviews procedures and guidelines related to dam safety; reviews work of lower-level Dam Safety staff regarding ; assists in defining technical projects appropriate for the program, especially those involving the practices of seismology and geotechnics; completes extent-of-condition assessments related to seismologic and/or geologic factors; and provides support during dam safety emergencies and emergency preparedness drills.Supervision ReceivedSupervision and guidance are provided by the first-line manager and are generally limited to overall objectives, general guidelines and policy, and high-level work prioritization. The incumbent is expected to plan and execute work components with minimal supervision.Skills and Proficiencies (May be job or organization specific)Strong knowledge of general geologic principles; strong proficiency in geophysics, seismology preferred, though unusual expertise in engineering geology with proficiency in seismology and geophysics will also be considered; high level of familiarity with both geophysical and conventional drilling-based techniques for subsurface characterization and construction; expert knowledge of dam safety equipment and practices, and dam-related construction processes; working knowledge of related disciplines including hydrology, hydraulics, statistics, structural engineering, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, engineering economics, and project management; familiarity with hydro plant operations and maintenance preferred; demonstration of strong interpersonal and communication skills required.Minimum Qualifications (Consistent with Classification Standard)Ten or more years as a geologist/engineer with experience in the practice of geology specifically applied to dam design, construction, or maintenance. This experience must involve aspects of seismology and earthquake engineering. Preference given to specific experience in earthquake engineering or seismology. Preference given to demonstration of significant field experience in geophysical studies, subsurface exploration, and construction oversight.Education and Experience/Certificates, Licenses, and Registration Requirements/Other RequirementsB.S. in Geology or Geologic Engineering from an ABET-accredited science or engineering program required. B.S. in Civil Engineering with accompanying minor in Geology or Geologic Engineering may also be considered. Advanced degree in Geology, Geologic Engineering, or Civil Engineering with an emphasis in geology preferred.Licensure as a professional geologist preferred, though registration as a professional civil engineer with demonstrated practice in geology may be given equal preference.Working Conditions Telework may be performed from within the TVA Work Area.
