The position manages a team of 3-4 writers, while also writing copy across media types, consistently positioning the value of Unum products and services by employing messaging that speaks to audience needs and pain points. The Marketing Writing Manager must be passionate both about creating great content that drives business goals and about motivating and developing other writers. Because accountability for message strategy is held mainly by others in the Marketing organization, collaboration and ability to align on writing direction are key.Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Develop content and copy by using creativity, broad-based market knowledge, audience awareness and consistent messaging for marketing initiatives across both digital and traditional deliverables
Manage team of 3-4 writers; assess performance and give feedback, provide guidance on upcoming work, and promote growth and development
Work as a writing team member on individual assignments about 75% of the time and manage performance and development of 3-4 writers approximately 25% of the time
Collaborate with the other Marketing team members on messaging structures and value propositions and partner to develop style guidelines, including tone and manner for all media
Act as a lead motivator of other members of Marketing to develop solutions, including, but not limited to digital, web, interactive, social, traditional and print materials
Write high-priority content with a deep understanding of customer desires and pain points, engaging them through both proof points and empathetic writing so that they will consider Unum’s products and services
Craft messaging to ensure deliverables are creative and distinct – cutting through the clutter of the marketplace
Provide support, standardization, best practices, and interconnection across internal Marketing teams
Leverage knowledge and thirst to investigate, innovate and develop creative trends
Job SpecificationsStrong writer
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, advertising or a related field, or equivalent experience
7+ years of experience in writing
A strong writing background with a superior portfolio
Superior skills and experience in writing and editing long-form and short-form content across digital and traditional channels
Reliable knowledge of AP style and ability to quickly learn internal style guide
Strong leader
2+ years of managing or mentoring other writers
Demonstrated ability to edit, coach and develop other writers
Ability to be a leader but also to motivate team members
Ability to resolve issues and conflicts with team members
Effective team member in busy Marketing shop
Ability to thrive in fast paced environment
Ability to operate with a sense of urgency to meet tight deadlines
Patience and determination to resolve issues in a timely manner
Ability to work on multiple projects in parallel
Ability to work well independently as well as in a team environment
High level of initiative and drive to succeed
Combination of creative and analytical skills
Passion for the art of idea development and all things creative
Ability to take strategy and run with it creatively

Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.$75,500.00-$142,700.00Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.
