POSITION SUMMARY:Responsible for product design, development and technical aspects of airbag inflator products. Under the general direction of a supervisor and/or higher level engineer, utilizes technical knowledge in (but not limited to) mechanical design, gas dynamics, fluid flow, and thermodynamics. Responsible for building, testing and validating the design of airbag inflators and related systems.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Evaluates and integrates system design concepts of internal inflator components and subassemblies, and the inflator interface to the airbag cushion/module.
Coordinates design data packages including drawings, specifications, etc. Ensures the design is completed and documented.
Generates and justifies design changes through Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
Manages preparation and maintenance of the Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and resulting test matrix; and ensures testing and reporting is completed.
Develops and executes DOEs, analyzes test data, prepares recommendations and formal engineering reports.
Understands the impact of the inflator design on manufacturing, quality and product success.
Work closely with manufacturing engineering to develop robust designs and processes.
Defines key and critical design requirements to ensure product quality and function.
Works with suppliers to coordinate component design development and design changes for supplier components.
Works closely with applications engineering to define performance specification limits.
Works closely with test technicians to develop test procedures and test instrumentation as necessary.
