CNC Machinist/Programmer

Ideally, we would like to hire a machinist with programming skills but are willing to train the right person who shows a strong aptitude for learning, detail and creativity.

What qualifications do I need?

Be teachable, work independently, work safely.

Strong communication skills (comprehension, asking clarifying questions, relaying information correctly to colleagues).

Clear communication through email, texts, phone, notes.

Be dependable, have integrity in your work, own your mistakes.

Understand 2-D part prints, and use of basic measurement devices.

Must be willing to work on defense-related projects.

Pass a background check.

Solid mechanical aptitude (interested in how things work).

A gentle approach with small, delicate parts.

What don’t I need?

You don’t need your own tools. We provide everything you will need to be successful.

You don’t need to be a master of everything.

You don’t even need to be a machinist, if everything else is a good fit.

What would I do each day at DSM?

Set up CNC machines to run low-volume jobs on Haas mills and Sodick Wire EDMs.

Work closely with colleagues in Assembly and Testing and Mechanical/Electrical Engineering departments.

Learn and develop 4-axis and 5-axis machining strategies on CNC mills.

Follow ISO9001 processes and adapt as they change. We are growing and learning, too.

Maintain machines to keep them in good running condition.

Keep the machine shop area clean, organized and safe.

Occasionally use manual machines (Bridgeport, surface grinder, band saw).

Work with newly hired machinists to train them in DSM’s protocols and methods.

Give input to make incremental improvements in manufacturing methods.

Learn and grow your skills in layout, programming, set-up and inspection.

What other skills would be helpful in landing this position?

General workshop skills.

Basic electrical and pneumatics.

Office computer skills (Excel, Word).

TCAT, vocational-tech or other technical training.

Esprit CAD-CAM experience is a plus.

BobCad CAM experience, (we are transitioning to Esprit Edge).

Understand GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

Are there other things I should know about working at DSM?

The work can be demanding and challenging, as we’re doing new things and pushing limits.

Occasionally we work early and/or late to get jobs done on time or solve problems.

There are not firm “start” or “end” times: 9am – 3pm are our core operating hours.

We are expected to take ownership of our tasking and manage our time accordingly.
