Long-View is an innovative micro school that focuses on cultivating a deep understanding of a discipline while also building skills and mindsets related to collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. Our teaching team works together to run the school and ensure a transformative learning experience for all students. This year there are 14 members on our teaching team who work with 80 children, ages 7-14 years old.

All Long-View 2nd-8th graders have a computer science class each week for two hours. Thus, over the course of the years a child is at Long-View, we have an amazing opportunity to establish a positive mindset around the discipline of CS, build reasoning skills, and construct understanding of key concepts and principles.

Our computer science program emphasizes programming as just one tool we use to study the science of computing. Instead of planning our learning around programming-specific skills, we ensure the learners are getting the most out of their two hour weekly instruction by focusing on key concepts and practices related to computational thinking. Throughout the program, learners build a flexible understanding of computational thinking and gain more experience with the mindsets that prepare them to take on extended projects in a variety of programming languages, for a variety of purposes. We push our learners to integrate their knowledge from Literacy, Math, and Science into our Computer Science Block. In this way, we are able to explicitly show our learners how different concepts can be transferred from one domain to another.

Core Responsibilities:

Lead computer science program

Instruct four two-hour CS classes for groups of around 20 learners, segmented by age bands that generally span 2 to 3 grade levels (ex. 2nd-3rd, 4th-6th, 5th-7th, 7th-8th)

Design and implement curriculum, forwarding computational thinking over any one programming language

Collect artifacts of learning throughout the year to track growth of learners; analyze, communicate, and write narrative reports on each learner as per Long-View’s assessment process
