Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is located in the Patient Administration Division at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, performing medical record coding for inpatient medical conditions. The medical center is a major teaching and residency training facility. Responsibilities Analyze inpatient medical records to ensure accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded-data required by The Joint Commission Standards (TJC) for Hospitals. Ensure inclusion and completeness of pertinent reports, data and arrangement of record contents in prescribed sequence. Utilize the encoder grouper and various resources to ensure inpatient cases are coded correctly and grouped to the correct Diagnostic Related Groups (DRG) which impacts resource allocation and third party collection for the facility. Perform qualitative analysis to ensure accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of medical record documentation. Educate and train other personnel on proper, accurate and current coding and documentation practices as it relates to inpatient coding. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: I have one year of specialized experience which includes experience performing complex medical record coding for inpatient medical conditions; analyzing inpatient medical data, code medical diagnoses and procedures and provide assistance to medical staff. Experience in providing training to clinic support staff, providers, etc on any documentation or coding issues identified during record analysis. Utilizing references, such as International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Clinical Modification; American Medical Association Current Procedural Terminology (CPT); Health Care Financing Administration Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS); Physicians' Desk Reference; and Department of Defense Unified Bio-statistical Utility (DOD UBU) coding guidelines. Experience assisting with training of coding methods and providing assistance with qualitative analysis to ensure accuracy of recorded data providing assistance on improving the effectiveness of documentation and coding methods and procedures which affect data quality, workload reporting, Relative Value Unit (RVU) reporting and Third Party Insurance revenue. The Act directed the DHA to take responsibility for the administration (i.e., authority, direction, and control) of Candidates that possess certification in Registered Health Information Administrators, Registered Health Information Technicians, Certified Coding Specialists, Certified Coding Associates, Certified Coding Specialists-Professional, Certified Professional Coders, or Certified Professional Coders-Hospital are highly desired.
