Batch Reactor OperatorROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will be required to, once trained, run a 1-gallon batch reactor under specified sets of conditions to qualify global catalyst supplies, troubleshoot commercial plant problems, and test new catalysts.The daily tasks will include but are not limited to operating the reactor to conduct polymerization experiments, packaging and disposing of waste per RCRA regulations, preparing polymer samples, preparing catalyst samples, documenting experiments, and general housekeeping tasks.The candidate will assist a team of research chemists in the catalyst R&D Group by generating catalyst performance data.The data is critical to the development and evaluation of novel polyolefin catalysts for the Packaging Specialty Plastics business.In addition to the reactor operation itself, the daily tasks include, but are not limited to: Packaging and disposing of waste per RCRA regulations Preparing polymer samples, preparing catalyst samples Documenting and/or communicating experimental results Basic lab analysis such as gravimetric analysis, titrations, etc.General housekeeping tasks.Reactor maintenance e.g., tubing and valve replacement, pump repair, vessel opening and cleaning, instrument replacement etc.Skills: This role requires mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, critical thinking, computer knowledge software systems, excel, word, etc. , and math skills.The candidate is expected to calculate solution dilutions, concentrations, unit conversions, molar ratios, etc.Knowledge of flammable and pyrophoric solids and liquids and their safe handling is required as well as the ability to work with and maintain the integrity of reagents that are highly sensitive to air and moisture.The candidate is expected to look up information such as boiling points, flash points, vapor pressure, molecular weight, density etc.The candidate's work will be directed by the lead coordinator; however, the candidate will be responsible for directly contacting either the lead coordinator or the research chemist for additional questions or clarifications if needed.The candidate will be accountable for the quality of the data generated.Good verbal and written communication skills and the capacity to interact effectively with coworkers at all levels.The role requires a high level of independence, motivation, interpersonal effectiveness, and reliability.Safety: There is potential for heavy lifting of up to 50lbs. PPE is required per the specified work locationSchedule: This role is based on a 12hr shift 4 days/weekRequirements: A minimum of an Associate s degree in a technical curriculum. A minimum cumulative 2.7 GPA in all coursework is required Or A minimum of 2 years relevant work experience as a lab tech, reactor operator, Chem tech, computer science, etc.Growth opportunities: The expectation is for the incumbent to be in his role for a period of three years before the move to a different role can be considered.Possible new roles may include but are not limited to lab technician in the catalyst group, expanded polymer characterization and handling role, expanded batch reactor operation responsibilitiesSafety: There is potential for heavy lifting of up to 50lbs.
