Commercial Carpenter Job Purpose: Under general supervision, perform journey-level work in the design, construction, repair and maintenance of structures and related physical facilities; act as lead worker to other classified staff in the area; and perform related work as required.
Commercial Carpenter Job Duties are, but are not limited to the following:
Design, constructs, remodels, retrofits and repairs interior and exterior structures made of wood, drywall ability to complete level five drywall finish, plaster, concrete or brick.
Design, constructs, retrofits and repairs cabinets, tables, shelves, benches, partitions, flooring, door and window frames, metal stud framing, FRP, tile, and other types of furniture. May install and repair modular furniture.
Secure furniture for Hurricane preparedness.
Cleans, maintains, adjusts, calibrates and services equipment used in the performance of duties.
Monitors work done by outside contractors for adherence to state and federal code requirements and reports back to supervisor.
Install, repair and maintains building roofs.
Assist in the writing of specifications for repairs and new construction.
Maintain appropriate services and repair records.
Research purchases and inventories equipment parts, chemicals and supplies.
Responds to routine and emergency calls for services and repairs.
May train and direct the work of other classified staff in the area.
Skills/Qualifications
Must be able to read and comprehend plans and blueprints
Recognize and select appropriate lumber types and grades
Make rough sketches, estimate cost, time and material of carpentry project
Knowledge of codes and regulations
Ability to work in a team setting
Ability to follow oral and written instructions
Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
Preparing and maintaining accurate records
Ability to promote and follow policies and procedures
Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in the installation, repair and maintenance on plumbing equipment
Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively with all people including those from diverse ethnic and educational backgrounds
Work Conditions:
Carpenters may work outdoors in all types of weather; lift and carry heavy objects; work under exposure to heavy traffic, high noise levels, etc.; may work varied shifts, nights, weekends and holidays; and may work with or be exposed to hazardous materials or chemicals.
Certificates & Licenses:
TWIC a plus
Minimum 3 years’ experience
Complete the following trainings as required: HASC Basic Plus, Forklift Aerial Lift Safety Awareness, lock out tag out, fall arrest, confined space, MSDS, asbestos and lead identification, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, OSHA and respirator training
