Operator - Packaging

Operators are responsible for overseeing packaging of the finished product into various sizes of bags or sacks as required by the customer. He or she will also perform various duties to maintain equipment in the packaging area and will execute work in a safe manner and maintain high housekeeping standards.

Essential Functions

Receives instruction on customer requirements for finished product packaging and labeling during the shift.

Understand and use the production schedule and packaging traveler.

Fills appropriate size packages with finished product using applicable packaging machine.

Operates and monitors packaging equipment and dry milling equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation and minimize downtime.

Stacks bags or sacks onto pallets

Labels product packages.

Empties fines and overs into supersacks for rework.

Samples the dryer, bags, & pallets per plan.

Perform minor maintenance on the packaging equipment.

Inspect and replace filter bags within the packaging baghouses.

Operate forklift to transport pallets of product.

Maintain housekeeping standards within the packaging area.

Responsible for updating time in the pay system.

Work Environment and Physical Demands

This job operates in a plant manufacturing environment.

The employee must be able to be physically active for much of a 12-hour shift.

They must be able to work in environments that are not fully climate controlled and in inclement weather.

They must be able to lift up to 55 lbs. frequently.

They must be able to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding and work at heights regularly.

They must be able to stand, walk, stoop, bend, and twist. They must be able to wear all PPE, as required, including but not limited to respirator and coveralls.

They should have roughly 20/20 vision, with or without corrective lenses of any type.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a non-exempt, 12-hour rotating shift position (6:45 - 6:45). It rotates through day and night shifts as well as a 2/2/3 grouping over 7-day period resulting in a 36/48 hr. work week. Holiday work is required on occasion.

Required Education, Skills, and Experience

A valid driver license

Fluent in English

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Minimum of 1+ years in a similar manufacturing environment.

Demonstrated ability and discipline to read, interpret and follow operating procedures, safety procedures, and maintenance instructions.

Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with others.

Ability to work in a team-based manufacturing environment where all members are expected to support one another.

High degree of operational discipline and demonstrated dedication to safety and environmental stewardship.

Demonstrated strong ethics.

Packaging knowledge and/or previous supervisory experience preferred.
