Heavy Equipment Mechanic - Construction (Shop & Field)

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy and light machinery/equipment within a shop environment. This includes construction equipment such as dozers, excavators, and aerial lifts. As well as fleet vehicles, water pumps, and small gas operated engines. Ensuring all equipment is safe, reliable, and operating at peak performance.

Key Functions and Responsibilities (Shop):

Diagnostics & Repairs

- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues, including gas and diesel engines

- Disassemble and reassemble components for repair and/or replacement

- Use diagnostic tools, software, and multimeters for troubleshooting

Preventative Maintenance

- Complete preventive maintenance and inspections such as safety checks, performing scheduled maintenance tasks (oil and filter replacements, etc.), as well as documenting results accurately in work orders for each machine

Technical Documentation

- Ability to interpret schematics, blueprints and technical manuals.

- Document work orders and service activities using designated systems and software on tablets and/or laptops

Shop Operations

- Maintain and organize shop, spare parts, and equipment for readiness

- Assist with parts inventory and ordering

- Occasionally support field mechanics with parts delivery and/or technical advice

Key Functions and Responsibilities (Field):

Diagnostics & Repairs

- Travel to job sites to inspect and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues

- Perform emergency repairs and scheduled maintenance in remote and/or rugged environments

- Use diagnostic tools and software to identify faults and recommend solutions.

Preventative Maintenance

- Complete preventive maintenance and field-based inspections such as safety checks, performing scheduled service routines (oil and filter replacements, etc.) to prevent breakdowns, as well as documenting results accurately in work orders for each machine

Mobile Operations

- Operate service trucks equipped with tools, parts, and diagnostic equipment

- Ensure compliance with DOT and OSHA regulations while on the road and at work sites

- Coordinate with dispatch and equipment operators for efficient service scheduling

Documentation and Communication

- Document work orders, service activities, parts used, and time spent at each job site using designated systems and software on tablets and/or laptops

- Communicate clearly with equipment operators and site managers about repair status

- Recommend long-term maintenance strategies and equipment upgrades when necessary

Required Qualifications:

-Minimum of 5 years experience servicing heavy equipment and light trucks in a shop environment

- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to read schematics

- Familiarity with OSHA safety standards

- Valid drivers license

- Own Master Tool Set for equipment service

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with digital diagnostic platforms and telematics

- Knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, gas and diesel systems

- Certifications from ASE or similar organizations

- Proficient in Microsoft Suite

Physical Requirements:

Work is performed in shop and outdoor environments year-round, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and other harsh weather. Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined or awkward positions for extended periods. Regularly lifts and carries up to 50 lbs. Must tolerate dust, noise, vibration, and exposure to fuels, lubricants, and other shop chemicals.
