The university strives to create new knowledge, to foster cultural and economic development, and to prepare its graduates to participate fully and freely as citizens of Texas, the nation, and the world.Communication Design Program at Texas StateThe Communication Design Program offers both BFA and MFA degrees and emphasizes the integration of critical thinking with a thorough understanding of design principles and processes relevant to the professional practice of design. The program embraces various contexts to prepare students to advance knowledge within the discipline and for successful entry into the profession and/or graduate education. Students experience deep immersion in the discipline via a distinguished faculty broadly recognized for their expertise in both the classroom and the profession. Through an agile and dynamic curriculum, the program prepares students to meet the evolving challenges of professional design practice, as evidenced by a strong record of student recognition in national and international venues.The School of Art and DesignThe School of Art and Design is one of five academic units within the College of Fine Arts and Communication which also includes the Department of Communication Studies, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, the School of Music, and the Department of Theatre and Dance. The School of Art and Design offers degree programs in Studio Art, Photography, Art Education, Art History, and Communication Design. These programs cross-pollinate, compelling students to search for deeper connections between disciplines. The school supports more than 80 faculty members dedicated to fostering the conceptual and technical abilities of its more than 900 declared School of Art and Design majors.Texas State UniversityFounded in 1899 as a teaching college, Texas State University is now home to more than 38,000 students. San Marcos is rich in vibrant and eclectic communities, with a public school district that is attended by more than 50% Latinx students and implements diverse bilingual education programs.Position SummaryWe seek applicants for three positions with expertise in Interaction Design, Brand Communication, Typography, or Design Foundations that reflect contemporary expertise, methodologies, and knowledge necessary for students to succeed in their course of study. Successful candidates may have opportunities to serve as an integral part of the graduate MFA program in Communication Design.Responsibilities

Teach courses within the BFA and/or MFA programs and facilitate student success

Participate in and lead curriculum development

Pursue research/creative activity and build a substantive record of professional/peer recognition

Engage in service to the program, school, college, university, community, and profession

Coordinate and collaborate routinely with colleagues throughout the school

Contribute to freshman orientations and other student success initiatives aimed at achieving educational equity

Mentor students with a wide range of cultural and academic backgrounds

This position is subject to the availability of funds.Required QualificationsQualifications for Professor

Candidates must have a PhD, MFA MDes, or equivalent graduate degree in communication design, visual communications, graphic design, interaction design, or a related discipline

Strong design fundamentals, typography, systems thinking, design research and conceptual skills

Demonstrated knowledge and technical proficiency in areas such as Interaction Design, Brand Communication, Typography, or Design Foundations

Ten or more years of successful undergraduate and/or graduate university/college level teaching in communication design discipline

Distinguished record of professional and/or scholarly accomplishments in research/creative activity within the area of communication design on international and national levels

Qualifications for Associate Professor

Candidates must have a PhD, MFA , MDes, or equivalent graduate degree in communication design, visual communications, graphic design, interaction design, or a related discipline

Strong design fundamentals, typography, systems thinking, design research and conceptual skills

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with technologies in areas such as Interaction Design, Brand Communication, Typography, or Design Foundations

Six or more years of successful undergraduate and/or graduate university/college level teaching in communication design discipline (may include graduate teaching assistantships)

Substantial record of professional and/or scholarly accomplishments in research/creative activity within the area of communication design on international or national levels

Qualifications for Assistant Professor

Candidates must have a PhD, MFA MDes, or equivalent terminal graduate degree in communication design, visual communications, graphic design, interaction design, or a related discipline completed by the date of hire

Strong design fundamentals, typography, systems thinking, design research and conceptual skills

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with technologies in areas such as Interaction Design, Brand Communication, Typography, or Design Foundations

One or more years of successful undergraduate and/or graduate university/college level teaching in communication design discipline (may include graduate teaching assistantships or mentorship of students in professional settings)

Growth and momentum with professional and scholarly accomplishments in research/creative activity within the area of communication design

Preferred QualificationsQualifications for Professor

Successful grant and funding procurement

Strong organizational, collaborative, and communication skills

Leadership experience and ability to motivate and coordinate groups

Substantial record of service in academic, professional, or community settings

Curriculum development in communication design courses

Graduate-level research/thesis supervision

Qualifications for Associate Professor
