Job Description

We believe that teaching is so much more than just passing knowledge onto students, which is why we use the title of "mentor" instead of teacher. The Special Education Mentor will “virtually” manage instructional programs for students with special needs. Through use of the telephone, Internet, and web-conferencing programs (such as Zoom and various curriculum tools) they will consult regularly with students, parents, and the SST team to ensure that each child successfully completes his/her instructional program. The Special Education Teacher will participate in all steps of the IEP process. They will work closely with mentors, LAU administration and Williamsburg Learning (our curriculum providers) to ensure that the school’s special education program is successful and operating in compliance with federal and state regulations. The Special Education Teacher will utilize technology to coordinate and deliver virtual instruction.

Reports to: LAU Special Education Director

Time required: This position is part-time. As this position is online, there is some flexibility in scheduling the work-week.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for the successful completion of the following tasks:

  • Manage and provide instructional guidance, virtual teaching and general strategies for a caseload of students;

  • Develop, write and help implement IEPs;

  • Initiate and evaluate tests and assessments, complete progress reports;

  • Communicate regularly with parents and mentors of students with special needs to insure that their IEP goals are being met, and that their needs are addressed in a timely and appropriate fashion;

  • Consult with mentors and coordinate the implementation of specially designed instruction as defined in the IEP regarding students with specific needs and potential learning issues;

  • Provide direct services to students including services delivered through web-conferencing software,

  • Communicate where needed with a paraprofessional who also provides direct services to students

  • Schedule, organize and conduct IEP-related meetings in a virtual environment, as needed;

  • Oversee the organization and proper implementation of all paperwork, documentation and procedures for the IEP process

  • Assist Special Ed director with locating service providers for students needing related services as mandated by their IEPs;

  • Assist Special Ed director with negotiating and executing contracts with service providers for students requiring such services;

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date data in the school’s Student Information System and special education software;

  • Assist with administering state testing and coordinate the special accommodations that are required based on the IEP;

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education (Required)

  • Candidates must reside in Utah

  • Valid Special Education credential in Utah

  • Experience in policy (IDEA) and/or administration with Special Education

  • Strong technology skills

  • Clean work environment that is free of distractions, including interruptions
  • Customer focused approach

  • High degree of flexibility

  • The ability to take and pass a criminal background check

  • Growth mindset

Preferred:

  • Alignment with the educational philosophy and methods described on the LAU website.

  • Highly organized yet willing to be flexible as the program changes and evolves.

  • Be a ‘team player’ and follow all Leadership Academy of Utah policies.

  • Have excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Be a quick learner with technology and proficient in using email, managing files, and recording and reporting electronically.

  • Prior history of working with middle and high school-aged students.

  • Familiarity with PowerPoint, cloud-based apps such as G-suite, and web-based conference platforms such as Zoom.

  • Prior use of Student Information Systems and Learning Management Systems.

Compensation:

  • Compensation for this position will be $28-30 per hour depending on experience.

Start Date:

  • Applicants reviewed on an ongoing basis. Position open until filled. The candidate will be onboarded in July or early August and will start on, or as soon as possible after August 3, 2020.
