WHO WE ARE The Road Home has been a leader in striving to end homelessness for over 100 years (1923-2024). We provide low-barrier emergency shelters, supportive services, and housing-first-minded rental assistance that helps individuals and families step out of homelessness and back into the community. We are seeking compassionate and empathetic individuals who are interested in making a difference in the lives of others and their community. JOB SUMMARYAt the direction of the Kitchen Manager, the Kitchen Staff will assist in the operation of kitchen duties, including assisting with food planning and preparation, ensuring proper food handling practices, food and kitchen clean-up, and maintaining safe and sanitary conditions of the facilities and equipment. The Lead Kitchen Staff will serve as the person in charge when the Kitchen Manager is not on-site, and direct meal service, clean-up and assignments as needed. Assists in developing menu plans in collaboration with delivered meals

Ensures meals are served at scheduled times each day. 

Collaborates with Volunteer Coordinator to provide the clear direction of food services and general overall operation of the kitchen with the kitchen volunteers and teach safe food handling practices.

Assists all kitchen volunteers in duties related to the kitchen and to meet all cleanliness standards when performing food related tasks, teach safe food handling practices; ex: appropriate clothing and footwear, hairnets, gloves or aprons. 

Maintains/organizes kitchen, food storage locations, and all equipment to ensure all is in proper working order and to meet all Health Department standards. 

Assists Kitchen Manager in the oversight of food storage and food handling practices to maintain the kitchen and food service areas according to safe food handling regulations.

Develops positive relationships with centers volunteers, guests, and other agency staff. 

 Acts as a member of a cohesive team. 

Clean and maintain floor drains weekly.

Willingness to understand that housing first, harm reduction, low barrier access to resources is best practice and essential to our mission at The Road Home.  

Ability to set and maintain good boundaries, using Trauma-Informed Care as a guideline

RequirementsEducation and Experience

High School Diploma or GED required

Current Food Handlers Permit or willing to obtain one within one month of hiring

Experience working with diverse populations preferred

Physical and Equipment Requirements

Ability to lift 50 pounds

Ability to stand and walk two or more hours at a time

Ability to operate kitchen equipment

Required Skills and Abilities

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse populations.

Willing to be a proactive member of a team.

Ability to work from a Trauma-Informed Care framework.

Familiarity with the Housing First philosophy.

Ability to work with community partners.

Self-starter and self-directed.

Ability to accept direction from Supervisor.

Excellent organizational skills and strong computer skills.

Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to diverse populations. Ability to contribute to the agency’s commitment to enhancing awareness and appreciation of diverse ethnic and cultural heritages.

Must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
