This position is responsible for delivering professional nursing care to patients in clinic, by phone, or patient portal. The Clinical Nurse will utilize strong organizational and leadership skills to assess patient status; implement clinical nursing interventions to modify symptoms; develop, implement and evaluate patient care plans to enhance and improve outcomes, and ensure a safe and therapeutic environment.The Department of Pediatrics is the second largest department in the University of Utah School of Medicine and one of the largest pediatric departments in the country. Performs management with patients’ caregiver(s), chart review, care coordination, triage, and problem management.

Discusses patient and family concerns in clinic, over the phone, and/or via the electronic health record.

Provides patient/family education surrounding common neurological conditions.

Communicates adjustments in treatment plan to families.

Formulates care plans for specific patients and documents the nursing process in patient’s record.

Evaluates patient response to interventions and modifies plan of care as needed to achieve health care goals. Communicates adjustments or changes in treatment plans to patient/family.

Develops and participates in educating patients and their families about care programs.

Communicates lab & other test results to families.

Provides medication refills.

Assists providers and staff with patient-related paperwork such as letters of medical necessity, DMV forms, school care plans, and preauthorization.

Maintains a safe and therapeutic patient care environment.

Works closely with triage team to provide high quality, efficient care to patients and their families.

Keeps current on advances in nursing care by participating in educational programs.

Orients and educates new staff in nursing techniques and departmental procedures.

Utilizes knowledge of medications, procedures, infection control, and safety precaution, and initiates appropriate interventions in crisis situations.

Participates in total quality management to positively affect patient and system outcomes to improve care.

Additional ResponsibilitiesThis nurse is expected to participate in outpatient clinic and will need to be able to :

Meet with each patient and their caregiver(s) to review any questions they may have regarding their visit.

Educate the patient and their caregiver(s) regarding any new medications prescribed.

Work with clinic MA’s to keep the clinic running smoothly.

Assist providers.

Triage phone messages received by patients and caregivers seen in clinic.

CommentsThe above responsibilities will be shared with other nurses and medical assistants in the Department. Incumbent will be expected to provide high-quality patient care in an organization focused on patient safety, patient and caregiver satisfaction, and positive patient outcomes; advocates for patients and caregivers to ensure unique needs are met; collaborates with highly skilled team members dedicated to achieving patient goals and providing world class care; actively participates in educational opportunities. Education in patient management is ongoing with the help of division practitioners and support staff.The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient’s status and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures manual.Minimum QualificationsRequiredCurrent RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system. The eCredential is to be obtained within 30 days of hire.Current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Utah, or obtain one within 90 days of hire under the interstate compact if switching residency to State of Utah. Must maintain current Interstate Compact (multi-state) license if residency is not being changed to Utah.PreferredSome positions may require additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support ( ACLS ), Pediatric Advanced Life Support ( PALS ), or Neonatal Resuscitation Program ( NRP ) within one year of hire.This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
