This role ensures the safety and security of patients, staff, and visitors at multiple healthcare facilities associated with the University of Utah, including the University Medical Center, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Huntsman Mental Health Institute, and several regional health centers.Team members work under the direction of the University of Utah Chief Safety Officer in a dynamic 24/7 environment, with shifts during mornings, evenings, and overnight. Depending on location, employees may work 10-hour or 13-hour shifts, offering a schedule that provides ample days off and promotes a healthy work-life balance.This role encompasses responsibilities in various areas, including a Level 1 trauma center setting, and provides opportunities to work in uniformed operations and patrol, dispatch, investigations, training, and risk assessment. Employees receive specialized training to work effectively with patients and address healthcare security’s unique challenges.We prioritize professional development, mentoring, and coaching, with a strong focus on promoting internal candidates within the organization. Implements preventive measures to minimize potential hazards.Conducts foot and vehicle patrols throughout the University Hospital and Clinics, including a Level 1 Trauma Center environment, as part of a proactive safety and security program. Patrols may extend to off-campus University properties, clinics, and research centers. Inspects buildings, check doors and windows and looks for signs of intrusion.Controls access to the University Hospital and Clinics by verifying identification, monitoring vehicles and packages, and managing the limited access program for internal doors.Maintains detailed logs to inform department heads of potential security concerns.Provides special services to the University community, including escorting individuals and assisting patrons and visitors with directions.Monitors the security of controlled substances and valuable equipment using surveillance systems to deter theft.Assists hospital staff during medical emergencies by managing crowd control and providing advanced de-escalation techniques. Collaborates with healthcare teams to ensure the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and visitors.Responds to threats and risks across the spectrum of workplace violence, addressing aggression that disrupts patient care or threatens the safety of staff and visitors.Assists in gathering information related to theft/property loss, workplace violence, and other incidents that may disrupt healthcare operations, referring matters to law enforcement as appropriate.Makes critical emergency decisions in response to public safety threats, prioritizing the health and safety of others even when personal safety is at risk.Prepares comprehensive reports and records to document incidents and ensure accurate communication.Obtains certifications in non-violent crisis intervention and defensive tactics through recognized training programs.Achieves Basic-level certification from the International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety ( IAHSS ).Assists medical staff with physical interventions involving disruptive or combative patients, ensuring the safety of all parties involved.Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma, GED or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Ability to successfully pass a background check

Demonstrated communications skills and a commitment to providing excellent customer service

A valid Utah Driver’s License to be obtained within 6 months of hire.
