Job Description:Functions as part of a dynamic and engaging laboratory team in a professional setting. This position facilitates laboratory organization and patient care, working closely with doctors, nurses, and medical laboratory scientists. LA I’s are responsible for ordering and preparing patient samples, such as blood and other body fluids, and delivering specimens to the appropriate department or testing facility. Shift Details: Swing Shift, 2pm-1030pm

The Lab Assistant is the gatekeeper to the clinical and pathology laboratory, performing a variety of functions to support laboratory testing and diagnosis. Their primary responsibility is the accurate labeling, accessioning, and processing of patient specimens, including tissue, blood, and body fluids, according to established procedures.Caregivers in this role can compassionately communicate procedures and specimen collection instructions with patients and clinical staff and demonstrate empathy during every interaction. They may have opportunities for growth, developing additional skills such as:

Phlebotomy

Laboratory Exception Handling

Laboratory testing

Reagent preparation and slide staining

Training and mentoring new staff

Participation in special projects

Interacting with pathologists and physicians

Operating multiple computer and test ordering systems

Operating basic laboratory equipment and automation

Researching laboratory testing requirements

Performing sterile specimen preparation techniques

Other responsibilities as required by site or assigned by the team or department leader

Caregivers in this position are detail-oriented and can recognize factors that may affect testing outcomes. They take appropriate action to solve problems and document errors.Minimum Qualifications

Basic Life Support certification (BLS)/RQI for healthcare providers (only applicable at sites where LAs perform phlebotomy)

High School diploma or GED in compliance with CLIA regulations

Excellent communication skills including ability to communicate in English (oral and written)

Customer service skills

Ability to work in a team environment under stressful situations

Ability to take on-call shifts, according to department needs

Self-motivated and able to work independently

Basic computer skills

Flexibility to work a variety of shifts that may include weekends, holidays and nights

Adheres to all personal protective requirements including, but not limited to, gloves, lab coats, face shields, and masks

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching concepts to others

Previous clinical lab or pathology experience

Physical Requirements:Physical Requirements

Interact with others requiring the employee to verbally communicate information.

Operate computers and complex and delicate lab equipment requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.

See and read lab equipment, monitors, and documents.

Remain sitting or standing for long periods of time to perform work on a computer or other equipment.
