WANTED: Caregiver for severely handicapped child.
Pay is $12.75 per hour with no benefits
Caregiver requirements
Must be able to carry a 40-50 pound child that is totally limp up and down a flight of steps daily to enter residence when necessary. Must also be able to carry this child throughout the day when needed for bathing, physical therapy and movement when necessary into wheelchair. Child must be fed through a j-tube and is on a 6 time a day medicine regimen. Child’s diaper must be changed regularly throughout the day and because of bladder issues, this will require changing of clothes throughout the day, washing of laundry (blankets, changing pads and clothing) related to bladder disorder. Child must be monitored continuously for seizures and vomiting throughout the day. At which time feed must be interrupted, child supported in an Upright position and mouth cleared of possible secretions or vomit.
Rescue meds must be given in emergency situations for seizures. In addition to feeding, water must be tube given throughout the day besides the water given with meds.
Caregiver must be able to pass a background check and provide proof of prior experience caring for a severely handicapped child.
The shift hours are from 6:30 am until 6:30 pm. With a maximum of 49 hours per week with a possible extra 7 hours of respite time, Monday through Sunday with shifts varying in accordance to parent’s schedules.
This is a very demanding job physically and emotionally.
Child’s condition is terminal if the precise practices in place are not followed exactly and medication given correctly. Child has recurring uncontrollable seizures throughout the day and night.
Some nights may be required as well.
Applicant for the position must work in the home and drive to and from Elkton Va without compensation for fuel or vehicle expenses.
Applicant cannot smoke cigarettes nor have any colds or viruses when working due to child being immuno compromised. Child is not allowed to be around 2nd or 3rd hand smoke as this can trigger seizures as well or cause child more respiratory issues.
No loud Music or noise is permitted as this may trigger seizures from the child. Child is very delicate and cannot support their own head, so extra care must be provided to insure no injuries. Child’s lips must have moisturizer applied throughout day. Oral hygiene will be part of care along with bathing. Child requires braces on their legs 4 hours per day to encourage and correct proper alignment of joints as the child grows.
Caregiver must be able to correctly put on and remove these as well.
We recommend applicant to be aware they may need to bring extra clothes for bowel mishaps that may occur and get on them. They will also be required to bring a bathing suit for water therapy with the child.
Applicant will also be required to mix food and medications precisely, understand the operation of bag to port feeding systems and correct issues if they occur. In case of port accidental removal or malfunction, attendant must be able to install a new port in the child’s stomach. If this does not happen within two hours it could be devastating to the child’s health because of the specific ketogenic diet and possible port in stomach trying to heal closed. The child cannot be given anything by mouth accept water in very small amounts through a syringe to keep hydration and moisture in the mouth throughout the day as well.
The Position will require some light housekeeping in relation to care. Washing dishes, clothes and bedding as needed.

Pay is bi-weekly, there is some sick leave that accumulates in accordance with hours already worked but no other benefits. All time must be recorded in an application on your mobile device that monitors your location while working.
