Recruiting PARAMEDICS!GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIESUnder general supervision, this position performs general technical protective service work in the field of emergency medical services. Reports to a Company Officer assigned to the station.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSProvides emergency response, basic or advanced life support and a variety of other assigned duties associated with emergency medical services; provides immediate emergency care to ill or injured persons; assesses the patient to determine the extent of the patients condition; renders immediate and appropriate treatment to include but not limited to emergency invasive procedures; and transports patients to appropriate medical facilities. Provides some mentoring through the preceptor program. Provides rescue and assists in performing rescues from hazardous sites such as auto accidents and collapsed buildings; and operates EMS apparatus and equipment. Performs routine clerical and administrative functions such as preparing reports and completing forms; performs work using computers and appropriate approved software. Performs housekeeping duties at assigned station; performs inspections, maintenance and minor repairs on apparatus and equipment for emergency medical services. Employees are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGEEmergency Medical Services - Knowledge of emergency medical care including trauma and advanced cardiac life support principles and practices. Knowledge of practices to include safety and infection control procedures pertaining to the use and operation of equipment, tools, and protective gear. Knowledge of incident command procedures, emergency vehicle operations, and basic maintenance needs including medical apparatus.Safety/Security - Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, procedures and practices as outlined in department directives as they relate to apparatus, equipment, tools, and protective gear. Maintains situational awareness.Customer Service - General knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction. REQUIRED SKILLSInterpersonal Relationships - Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees, managers, and representatives from other departments and organizations. Shares knowledge with staff for mutual and departmental benefit.Judgment/Decision Making - Anticipates, identifies and evaluates potentially dangerous, unusual or deviating situations and exercises appropriate judgment to establish priorities and take prompt action for problem resolution.REQUIRED ABILITIESCommunication- Ability to communicate ideas effectively, including the preparation of reports and logs. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.Time Management - Ability to plan and organize daily work routine. Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology.Geography- Ability to reads maps, basic plans and diagrams such as evacuation or building floor plans.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCERequires a minimum of a High School or General Education Diploma (GED) with 1-2 years of related work experience to include one (1) year of experience in the provision of emergency medical care, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSRequires a comprehensive background investigation to include a local, state and federal criminal history check and sex offender reg stry check. Requires satisfactory results from a medical evaluation and pre-employment substance abuse testing and is subject to random controlled substance testing. A valid Virginias drivers license with an acceptable driving record with no more than 3 negative points on current driving record. Employees are required to refrain from the use of tobacco. Requires completion of the Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic program and National Registry Test to include Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Prehospital Trauma Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Certifications must be maintained for continued employment. Must be currently performing at a satisfactory (Meets) or higher level.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing to include climbing ladders. Some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, crawling, and the lifting to include overhead lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over).
