General Statement of Duties: The Day Center Assistant has a variety of duties that help the ministry run smoothly.
Supervision received: Reports to the Director or the Assistant Director.
Typical Working Conditions/Hours: Monday - Thursday, 8 AM to 3 PM. Additional hours may be required for trainings, meetings, presentations, and special events.
Examples of Duties:
1. Sets up the Day Center each morning and prepares for guests, including starting coffee, setting up coffee cups, putting out sandwiches, snacks, bottled water and other food when available, and preparing the logs for clients to sign in.
2. Maintains a presence in the Day Center, greets and directs homeless and at risk adults seeking assistance, distributes towels, toiletries, sandwiches, water and coffee cups, addresses any concerns, and informs other staff of problems if additional support is needed.
3. Opens the outreach office for scheduled outreach workers to meet privately with clients; informs Director of absences or problems with outreach workers.
4. Ensures all clients sign in to and initial the appropriate logs. Provides assistance if clients do not understand the questions or have difficulties in answering the questions. Submits completed log pages to Director for HMIS data entry.
5. Conducts housing assessments for eligible clients using the approved community tool and submits documents to the Director for inclusion in the bimonthly meetings.
6. Provides information to clients on community resources using the resource lists and other tools as available.
7. Allows client access to the phone in the phone room and assists with making calls when needed.
8. Cleans the Day Center each afternoon, including cleaning bathrooms (stalls, sinks, showers, etc.), kitchen, mopping floors, cleaning tables and chairs, cleaning coffee pot, taking out trash and boxes, sorting and restocking hygiene donations, and pulling sandwiches/other foods as needed for the next day.
9. Washes towels using St. Columba washer and dryer. Does client laundry when this service is offered.
10. Works directly with volunteers to serve clients. Assists new volunteers as they gain familiarity with the Day Center, including location of toiletries, shower log, procedures in Day Center and other relevant information.
11. Assist with donations, including collecting donor information, receiving, processing, stocking and distributing donations as needed.
12. Stocks supplies (paper products and cleaning items) from upstairs storage and informs Director of Day Center needs for ordering supplies on a monthly basis using the provided forms.
13. Provide outside maintenance of property including picking up trash, sweeping/blowing, and putting trashcans out for pick up Thursday morning and bringing them in after pickup.
14. Changes light bulbs and filters as needed; performs other small maintenance tasks as abilities allow.
15. Informs Director of major repairs needed to the facility.
16. Assist with Food Pantry, special programs (e.g., Thanksgiving and Christmas) and other duties as needed.
Accountability:
1. Maintains neat, accurate and current Day Center logs.
2. Submits monthly inventory to the Director of Ministries.
3. Maintains timesheets as required by the Assistant Director.
4. Conducts self in professional manner in all contacts with clients, referring agencies, staff and public. Maintains standards of ethics and confidentiality. Maintains strict professional boundaries with clients.
5. Dresses appropriately for the day’s work.
6. Submits to drug testing as requested.
7. Receives annual performance review, once annually past the initial six (6) month probationary period.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
This position requires the Day Center Assistant to use good judgment in working with persons from a broad spectrum of life experiences and varying degrees of mental, emotional, and physical health.
Knowledge areas include basic janitorial and maintenance skills, and use of washer and dryer. Skills in organization, time management, documentation and responsibility are beneficial. The ability to lift up to 25 pounds is necessary for this position. Individual must be a self-starter and work well with a variety of different people.
Compensation
Starting pay is $15.00/hour with sick, vacation and holiday pay.
