We encourage applications from women, people of color, people with disabilities, veterans, and other candidates from underrepresented backgrounds and with diverse experiences interested in this opportunity.About the PositionUnder general supervision by the Environmental Health & Safety Director, the Laboratory Safety Consultant is responsible for developing and implementing WWU's Laboratory Safety Program. This position will be responsible for providing laboratory risk assessments, inspecting WWU's laboratory facilities, equipment and operations, to improve safety in University laboratories and to ensure compliance with institutional, state and federal safety laws, regulations, codes and standards.Required Qualifications

Bachelor degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or closely related field and four years of experience in laboratory safety or related field OR equivalent education/experience

A Master's degree with a major study in chemistry, biochemistry or closely related field may be substituted for two years of the above professional work experience requirement.

Knowledge of laboratory safety requirements

Understanding of the health and physical hazards of chemicals and the ability to read and understand information provided on chemical Safety Data Sheets

Familiarity with safety codes and standards that apply to laboratories

Familiarity with hazard assessment, implementing the hierarchy of controls.

Experience implementing administrative procedures and selecting engineering controls for laboratory activities

Safety training development and delivery experience

Demonstrated professional written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated ability to handle stressful situations in a professional manner

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with the community, University and higher education partners, fostering diversity

Proficiency with Microsoft Suite

Experience working independently and within a team environment.

Ability and willingness to wear a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and other respirators in routine and emergency situations

Ability to lift up to 40 pounds

Valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification

24 or 40 hour Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training

Familiarity with Hazardous Material Transportation Requirements

Master's degree in occupational safety and health, Industrial Hygiene, Safety studies, or similar

Experience in higher education or other laboratory setting

Familiarity with Dangerous Waste Regulations

Familiarity with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules and Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories

Experience with radioactive materials and radiation surveying equipment

Project management experience

Program development experience

Experience in implementing, supporting or overseeing safety duties in laboratories

Significant experience with safety codes and standards applicable to laboratories

Experience providing and explaining laboratory safety requirements in design and construction of laboratory buildings and laboratory renovations
