This series position performs progressively responsible custodial and porter duties such as sanitizing, scrubbing, stripping floors, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, garbage removal, restocking, and minor maintenance in City maintained buildings. Responds to and cleans sanitary hazards. Follows established procedures for securing buildings. Operates varying portable equipment as required to clean and maintain buildings. Maintains cleaning equipment and is responsible for reporting equipment and facility repair needs.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Custodial Maintenance worker I is an entry level position in the Custodial Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents at this level will receive training and oversight as new or unusual situations arise. Custodial Maintenance Worker I is distinguished from Custodial Worker II by a primary focus on performing routine custodial tasks. Incumbents in the Custodial Maintenance Worker I position will move to Custodial Maintenance Worker II in a non-competitive promotion upon satisfactorily completing three years as a Custodial Maintenance Worker I.
The Custodial Maintenance worker II is distinguished from the Custodial Maintenance Worker I by the ability to and responsibility for independently performing the full range of routine to unusual custodial tasks and minor maintenance duties. Incumbents at this level have comprehensive knowledge of departmental policies, procedures and safety guidelines.
Custodial team members may be assigned to either swing shift (4:45p-1:15a) or day shift, based on departmental need at time of hire. Schedule may include weekends and holidays.
Placement into the Custodial Maintenance Worker Series is based on the required experience and training requirements.
The 2025 starting hourly rate is at Step 1. The full salary ranges for each position are:
Custodial Maintenance Worker I: $22.98 - $28.07 per hour
Custodial Maintenance Worker II: $24.28 - $29.71 per hour
These positions are represented by a union. For external candidates, placement within the range is based on qualifications and professional experience in accordance with City policy. For internal candidates, placement within the range is based on City Pay Placement Procedures. Employees receive step increases annually in accordance with the Guild of Pacific Northwest Employees, Local 1937 Collective Bargaining Agreement and City policy.
City of Bellingham full-time employees receive medical, dental, and vision insurance as well as life insurance and long-term disability. Additional benefits include flexible spending accounts, a medical insurance opt-out program, and access to our employee assistance program. All eligible City employees are enrolled in a Washington State Department of Retirement Systems pension plan. Additionally, employees may elect to participate in the City’s 457 deferred compensation retirement savings plan.
Employees will receive 12 paid holidays in addition to one paid floating holiday each year. Employees accrue 8 hours total of contract and state sick leave per month in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and Washington State Law. At the time of hire, employees will accrue 7.33 hours of vacation per month. Vacation accruals increase based on years of service. Leave accruals are based on 1.0 FTE, accruals are pro-rated if part-time and require employees to be in paid status at least 120 hours/month.
