Nature of Work

Are you a self-motivated individual who enjoys working outdoors and wants to make a difference in your community? The Public Works Department is looking for a Parking Technician with strong communication and customer service skills to enforce parking codes and regulations.

This classification series performs a variety of duties associated with parking code enforcement including providing information to the public, issuing citations for violations of parking regulations, investigating community complaints about violations and maintaining parking control equipment. Enforces State and City codes regarding parking regulations. Serves multiple locations around the City such as the Downtown area and Fairhaven. Reports accidents, disturbances, and malfunctioning City traffic equipment to appropriate City staff. This position involves a high degree of public contact. Maintains close working relationships with compliance personnel from other City departments. May be called out for emergency work. Attention to safety and protection of personnel and equipment is integral to the work.

Placement into the Parking Technician Series is based on the required experience and training requirements. Currently there is one (1) full-time vacancy (40 hours per week) in the Public Works Department.

Hourly Rates:

Parking Technician I: Starting hourly rate is at Step 1 ($25.96/hour) for full time positions. The full salary range for this position is $25.96/hour - $31.90/hour.

Parking Technician II: Starting hourly rate is at Step 1 ($27.55/hour) for full time positions. The full salary range for this position is $27.55/hour - $33.91/hour.

These positions are represented by a union. For external candidates, placement within the range is based on qualifications and professional experience in accordance with City policy. For internal candidates, placement within the range is based on City Pay Placement Procedures. Employees receive step increases annually in accordance with the Guild of Pacific Northwest Employees, Local 1937 Collective Bargaining Agreement and City policy.

City of Bellingham employees receive medical, dental, and vision insurance as well as life insurance and long-term disability. All eligible City employees are enrolled in a Washington State Department of Retirement Systems pension plan. Additionally, employees may elect to participate in the City’s 457 deferred compensation retirement savings plan.

Employees will receive 12 paid holidays in addition to one paid floating holiday each year. Employees accrue 8 hours total of contract and state sick leave per month in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and Washington State Law. At the time of hire, employees will accrue 7.33 hours of vacation per month. Vacation accruals increase based on years of service. Leave accruals are based on 1.0 FTE, accruals are pro-rated if part-time and require employee to be in paid status at least 120 hours/month.
