Seeking a Caregiver
for our brother Chris, 57, with DS

We are looking for a Caregiver and a little magic
for our brother Chris, who is 57 and has Down syndrome.

We are looking for a person, couple or family who would like to bring Chris into their home and include him as an active “family member.” This is a Washington State (well-paid) position that theoretically would be provided in a single family residence, though we are open to other residency options, to be discussed.

The available 24-hour position is to involve and support Chris in planning daily schedules that encourage variety, community involvement, and healthy choices. This caregiving opportunity will fit an imaginative, self-motivated, flexible, and detailed-oriented individual/couple/family. Record keeping, good communication skills, and minor State certifications are required. Paid training is available.

While our family is spread wide geographically, we maintain frequent communications and support between ourselves and Chris. This is an important part of what we aim to continue when we find the right “extended family” situation in Washington: our family will remain present to enjoy telephone/ zoom interactions, provide support, and also be available for periods of Respite time.

Chris is a team-player and can-do person when opportunities are presented in an appealing way. He is healthy and fit, and is happiest when staying busy with household and yard work chores, being out and about, playing games and engaging with people. Chris is curious, capable, and has a good sense of fun. He truly enjoys the company of kids and pets, is appropriate with teenagers and elders alike, and has an actively inquisitive mind. Occasionally a moment of stubbornness may arise, peacefully remedied by a few demonstrable methods. Chris is very observant, sensitive, and takes joy in helping others. He is gregarious and is looking forward to being included in situations and activities where he can meet new friends!

In Chris’ words, some goals of what his new situation will include are: living together with people who are interested to talk and plan active days and outings together, do activities like board games and art, sing songs, cook, and have meals together. Chris would like to help with chores in the house and outside, and sometimes in the evenings watch movies together. He requests help fixing things that break, like CD players, and also would like support finding new friends and maybe even a romantic relationship.

If you are an active person/couple/family, perhaps already experienced in working with someone with disabilities, but more than anything, willing and wanting to bring into your daily life a pretty cool person with Down syndrome, please send us an introductory email: ericablewis@mac.com
