Mt Baker Products, Bellingham's premier plywood manufacturer, has an immediate opening for a Veneer Grader. This is a full-time day shift (5:00 am to 2:00 pm; Mon-Fri) with potential for overtime, including on Saturdays.
JOB SUMMARY: The Veneer Grader examines veneers as they are being paired to check for defects, such as knots, stains, decay, splits, faulty edges, pitch pockets, and wormholes. Grades veneers based on species; determines their use to meet the highest marketable value based on material.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Checks veneers as they are being paired for defects, such as stains, knots, splits, faulty edges, and pitch pockets. Sorts out unsatisfactory pieces based on order specifications and places the pieces on carts for regrade to use for other orders.
2. Tallies pieces of plywood, according to grade and species.
3. Ensures that specified dimensions are achieved; checks to ensure there is no inner ply exposure; adds or subtracts veneers accordingly.
4. Performs basic computer operations to create/scan tickets and add regrade notes.
5. Pushes and pulls loaded rolling carts of various weights (at or exceeding 100 lbs.); may work with other individual(s) to move the carts into position for forklift.
6. Assists in veneer pairing, as assigned.
7. Performs clean-up duties, such as sweeping and moving carts to allow forklift access.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must be at least 18 years of age.
2. This is an entry level position; we provide training for grading, sorting, pairing and other inspection techniques to determine veneer quality, based on material and species. Prior experience in quality assurance or product sorting/grading is a plus, but not required.
3. Familiar with basic computer operations; we will train in the program(s) used.
4. Able to read, write and understand English to process tickets and add regrade notes.
5. Basic math skills - add; subtract; divide; multiply.
6. Able to stand for long periods and remain focused while inspecting for defects and determining the grade of materials.
7. Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team and be flexible in job duties to assure that the production process is continuous.
STARTING PAY RATE: $19.00/per hour
SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 5 am to 2:00 pm; overtime may be required, including on Saturdays.
WORK ENVIRONMENT and PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The employee will work in an environment with dust particles and heavy-duty machinery; PPE is required. The temperature may vary depending on season. Ability to walk and stand for long periods; requires fine hand/finger movement for keyboard and gripping veneer edges and using hand tools; ability to distinguish colors, fine details, and defects/irregularities on veneer panels. Ability to assist in pushing and pulling loaded rolling carts of various weights, at or exceeding 100 lbs. on cement floor.
