Crane Operator

We are seeking an experienced Crane Operator to support heavy civil and hydro-mechanical construction activities on a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) project. The Crane Operator will be responsible for safe operation of mobile cranes in compliance with project specifications, OSHA standards, and EM 385-1-1 requirements. This position requires proven experience handling complex lifts, demonstrated knowledge of rigging practices, and adherence to all site safety and quality procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Operate mobile cranes to lift, move, position, and place heavy loads in support of dam, water resource, and civil works construction.

Perform all crane operations in strict compliance with EM 385-1-1 Chapter 16 (Load Handling Equipment) and Chapter 15 (Rigging).

Coordinate with riggers, signal persons, lift directors, and site supervisors to ensure safe execution of lifts.

Conduct pre-operation inspections, operational tests, and ensure equipment condition meets manufacturer and USACE requirements.

Review and comply with project-specific Lift Plans and Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs).

Maintain clear and effective communication with crew members during crane operations.

Stop operations and refuse to handle loads if safety is compromised until corrective actions are confirmed by a Qualified Person.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum 3 years’ experience operating cranes of equivalent capacity and characteristics.

Current crane operator certification from a nationally accredited testing organization (e.g., NCCCO) or equivalent.

Physical examination within the last 12 months with emphasis on hearing, vision, and cardiovascular fitness.

Demonstrated training and proficiency in ASME B30 requirements; refresher training at least every 5 years.

Familiarity with OSHA 29 CFR 1926 Subpart CC, EM 385-1-1, and USACE safety requirements (01 35 29.10 28).

Understanding of rigging practices and ability to work with Qualified Riggers per EM 385-1-1 Chapter 15.

Valid state driver’s license; CDL preferred.

Preferred Qualifications

Previous experience on USACE or other federal civil works projects.

Demonstrated proficiency with multiple crane types (hydraulic, rough-terrain, crawler).

Knowledge of crane mat placement, outrigger load distribution, and ground bearing requirements.

Employment Requirements

Submit affidavit of qualifications and certifications signed by both operator and Contractor.

Provide documentation of most recent medical examination.

Pass project-specific drug and alcohol testing requirements.

Comply with all site safety procedures and PPE requirements.
