Posting Context Statement:

The Network Team within the Office of Information Technology provides mission critical network connectivity for multiple campuses across the state. This team works closely with vendors and service providers across the state of Idaho to provide internet connectivity.

Position Overview:

The Network Engineer I provides mission critical, enterprise network and security services, including design, planning, procurement, provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and consulting, for multiple campuses across the state. They will engage with equipment vendors and service providers to address design questions and escalate support problems.Duties may include:Provide consultation and expert network support, resolve complex issues, implement changes and complex network configurationsMaintain detailed work logs for tracking requests and resolving hardware, software and service problemsCollaborate with vendors and service providers to resolve incidentsMaintain and enhance support through continuous improvement activities and new technology implementationIdentify and respond to network issues, outages and eventsMaintain network management and security toolsProvide training and support to the U of I community, communicate accepted practices and work within resource boundaries to develop solutionsFoster an atmosphere of collaborative problem solving, displaying a strong commitment to customer serviceOther duties as assignedThe Network Engineer II leads the selection, design and implementation of new network and security technologies and services. They provide mission critical, enterprise network and security services, including design, planning, procurement, provisioning, monitoring, troubleshooting, and consulting, for multiple campuses across the state.Duties may include:Maintain and enhance network stability, security and efficiency through continuous improvement activities, implementation of new technologies, consultation and incident responseProvide expert network consultation, recommend solutions and collaborate on network additions and reconfigurationsMonitor, troubleshoot, and manage the network, including incident handling and escalation to vendors and service providers when necessaryDesign, customize and implement network upgrades and expansions while ensuring minimal disruption to network availabilityMonitor, troubleshoot and respond to security incidents and vulnerabilitiesProvide expert network support by addressing inquiries, resolving complex issues, and implementing changesOptimize client and program satisfaction through collaborative problem-solving, strong commitment to customer service and timely action to meet network and system needsOther duties as assigned

Required Experience:

Network Engineer IExperience in enterprise network operationsIdentifying and solving data network problemsInstalling, administering and configuring switches, routers and wireless access pointsNetwork Engineer IIOne year of configuration experience with network operating systemsIdentifying and solving data network support problemsWorking with:Routing protocols, Access Control Lists (ACLs) and VLAN configurationsStructured wiring systems and standardsInteracting with users and delivering customer serviceWorking in a team environment and promoting the goals of the organization

Required Education:

Network Engineer IHigh School Diploma or equivalentNetwork Engineer IIBachelors Degree in a computer science related field; four additional years of configuration experience with network operating systems (for a total of five years) may substitute for a Bachelors Degree

Required Other:

Must be able to respond to emergency calls outside business hours, including evenings and weekendsMust be able to implement planned network maintenance outside business hours, including evenings and weekends
