Battery Modeling Research Engineer

Summary: At Meta Reality Labs, our goal is to explore, innovate and design the hardware for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. The mission of the battery team is to develop power sources for the devices that enable these experiences.We are looking for an experienced and motivated Battery Modeling Research Engineer to join our team who specializes in leveraging the principles of electrochemistry to maximize the utilization of Li-ion batteries in our products. We are specifically looking for a candidate highly skilled in developing and validating electrochemical models capable of projecting battery performance degradation in the field.Required Skills: Battery Modeling Research Engineer Responsibilities:

Design and define research plans, methods, and protocol that deliver on technical roadmap strategy from feasibility to new technology initiatives (NTI) for battery degradation modeling

Identify major battery degradation mechanisms for our products and develop validated first-principle electrochemical battery models to estimate battery swell behavior and performance degradation in the field

Help develop and execute research & NTI roadmap and strategy in close coordination with product, research, and XFN teams

Drive the improvement and development of electrochemical battery models to guide cell design in the architecture phase and eventually incorporate into products

Develop and validate geometrical models to approximate battery dynamics for a common chemistry formulation in different form factors

Leverage insights from electrochemical models to propose real-time algorithms which help achieve the right balance between battery performance metrics such as charge time, cycle life and runtime

Maintain the highest of research standards to ensure validity and reproducibility of results

Understand data collection methods, analyze field data and develop techniques for predicting field performance from validation data and battery models

Minimum Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications:

BS in Chemical, Material, or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience

3+ years of industry experience in developing physics-based battery models for consumer electronics or electric vehicles

Modeling, prototyping and programming skills in MATLAB/Python, and/or COMSOL

Familiarity with standard electrochemical characterization techniques (EIS, GITT, etc.) and experienced in developing custom test procedures in different form factors

Willingness to work across multiple domains including cell, electrical, software and validation engineering

Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

MS or PhD with 5+ years of experience in software development for battery management systems

Familiarity with cell manufacturing processes and major Li-ion cell manufacturers for consumer electronics

Experience with using AI/ML algorithms for battery health diagnostics or forecast

Knowledge of control and estimation theory, model order reduction techniques and their application to Li-ion battery modeling

Experience developing test plans to validate the algorithms and implementation for battery management systems

Working knowledge of battery fuel gauge algorithms for consumer electronics
