Soundview Supported Living

We have several Direct Support Professional positions in Mount Vernon, including one overnight (11pm to 7am) and and one swing. Shifts will include weekends and holidays. These are entry-level positions with all training provided. Overnight position is full time, Swing position 40 hours per week, with a second swing at less than full time. What is Supported Living?

Some people need help in order to live full lives. They need personal support to reach their maximum potential. That can mean very different things depending on the person. We work with the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), which is part of the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). We are a private non-profit agency that exists solely for our clients.

Sometimes, the people we support come to us from very restrictive settings either at home or in institutions. Its been shown that treating people with respect and integrating them in the community reduces or even eliminates the need for those restrictions. Helping people like that requires training, heart, and even bravery. The rewards are not monetary, but they will be something you always carry with you.

Occasionally the goal is to maintain hard-earned skills that would fade without practice.

Other times, the goal is to acquire the skills needed to become fully independent.

Mostly though, the goals for an individual supported by us fall somewhere in-between these two extremes. What is the job?

Becoming a Direct Support Professional (DSP) with us will involve many different skills.

Hygiene tasks: Showers, brief changes, toileting, etc.

Medication administration: Becoming delegated by our RN to give meds or oversee clients as they take meds and ensure safety.

Positive Behavior Support: Learning how to deal appropriately with challenging behaviors to lessen or eliminate them.

Trainer: You might instruct a client about doing their laundry or balancing a checkbook. You might work hard at teaching a client to use a tablet to communicate. Or perhaps you will help someone learn to make simple menu choices.

Interpreter: You might interpret for a client with a unique style of communication as they navigate the world.

You might help grocery shop. Or you might go to a dance. Or push a wheelchair at the zoo.

Or, you might spend your nights cleaning, while monitoring clients as they sleep. Overnight jobs still require all the skills, but often leave enough time for college homework or a movie. What are the requirements?

You must be at least 18 years old and have a high school degree or G.E.D.

Have a valid drivers license.

Able to pass state and federal background checks¦. This means you have no disqualifying convictions.

Able to do the work physically, which may involve lifting or supporting clients with gait problems.

You must be a caring person that is willing to support others unconditionally.

Training requires a flexible schedule and will include mornings and off-site classroom training. What are the benefits?

Paid training. All the training needed to become a DSP, a title recognized all over the state.

Sick and vacation pay accrual. One floating holiday per year.

$13.30 to start. Periodic raises.

Work with a group of good people, who are all there for the right reasons!

Not sure if the job is right for you? That is OK; let us figure it out together. You can meet floor staff, say hello to clients, even job shadow after a background check is completed (and privacy consents are signed).
