Carpenter/Mason

Project scope: Demolish existing infrastructure and perform site preparation for installation of a new playground. Prepare slabs, walkways, and other surfaces.
Project length: Approximately five to six months, April to September.
Compensation: Approximately $65/hr. plus per diem for traveling workers
Location: Naval Air Station Whidby Island, WA
JOB SUMMARY
The Mason/Carpenter is responsible building forms for placing, smoothing out, leveling and finishing concrete at job or construction sites.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Job duties include but are not limited to:
Design and fabricate forms for concrete
Read and comprehend plans and blueprints; make rough sketches, estimate cost, time and materials of carpentry projects.
Ensure work meets code and specifications.
Perform heavy physical labor, train and direct work of other staff.
Mix mortar, grout, slurry, concrete, or related masonry material
Use machines that vibrate concrete to fill air pockets.
Spread concrete using groovers, hand trowels and other tools.
Smooth out concrete in segments to ensure the concrete poured is level making sure all lumps and bubbles are smoothed over.
Rub cement in with sponge-rubber float or burlap.
Use wood or plastic forms to shape the concrete and hold it until it is set.
Finish corners by hand.
Halt concrete pouring if weather looks bad.
Fill roadways, driveways, sidewalks, bridges, homes, and parking lots.
Install masonry according to specifications.
Install prefabricated building components
Pour sand in as filler.
Use chemical additives to speed up drying process if necessary.
Apply cleaning solvents, adhesives, caulking, sealants, coatings, plaster, stucco or related material
Erect scaffold; Climb ladders, scaffolding, or utility or telephone poles
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Must pass background check for base passes to a military installation
High School Diploma or GED.
Must have completed apprenticeship.
5 years’ experience in carpentry and mason work
Must be able to provide a clean driving abstract and valid driver’s license.
