LEAD CUSTODIAN/CUSTODIAL SUPERVISOR

This is a year-round position with a full-time appointment in the Facilities and Safety Department. This position reports to the Vice President of Facilities & Safety.

The Lead Custodian/Custodial Supervisor performs administrative duties and custodial duties for the Facilities and Safety Department. Responsible for the assignment and direct supervision of custodial staff and student workers in maintaining the cleanliness and sanitation of facilities, furnishings, and equipment. Duties include but are not limited to hiring, training, and supervising custodial staff, performing custodial duties daily, managing a variety of vendors and services, data management, utilizing Microsoft Office programs, assisting students and employees with facility related matters, department meetings and presentations, processing facilities requests using FMX, and assisting with event setup and cleanup. Must be professional, customer-focused, and able to work in a diverse and dynamic environment. Must use time and resources efficiently, have excellent interpersonal skills, and possess a special eye for detail and a knack for problem solving. Must be a self-starter, cool-under-pressure, and never hesitate to roll up your sleeves to get the job done.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Duties are performed on campus and off-site as needed. Working effectively and collaboratively in a team environment is a must. Working conditions are as follows:

Duties are performed in a school campus and office environment. Working indoors and outdoors is required. When working outdoors, may be subject to inclement weather. The work may be strenuous at times and may include lifting heavy objects, and standing, stooping, and kneeling for long periods. Custodians risk exposure to blood, bodily fluids, blood borne pathogens, infections, and chemicals; and must follow strict safety procedures to avoid exposures.

This is a non-exempt, full-time, regular position. Overtime may be required as necessary.

Summer schedule for this position is Monday – Thursday, 7:00am – 3:00pm, Fridays 6:00am – 2:00pm.

Winter schedule is Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:00pm.

Schedules include a 30-minute paid lunch break.

WAGE RANGE: $26.00 - $28.00 per hour

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Five years of assignment-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience to successfully perform the essential duties.

Documented experience supervising a team.

Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Documented experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, and computerized database programs.

Will on occasion be required to drive on behalf of Perry Technical Institute. Employee must possess a working vehicle, hold a valid driver’s license, have an acceptable driving record, and produce proof of insurance.

Must be willing to consent to a drug test.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Documented experience working with vendors and managing procurement services.

Experience working in a school or higher education setting.

Experience operating and maintaining Tennant floor equipment.

Mobile Elevated Working Platform (MEWP) certified.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Supervise custodial staff and student workers directly, by using both verbal and written instructions, to ensure the quality of custodial services and adherence to best practices and standard operating procedures. Institute corrective measures when necessary.

Ensure that custodial services meet the needs of the school by coordinating normal and as-needed unique work schedules and cleaning checklists to compensate for changing priorities, special projects, scheduled events, and custodial absences.

Assist in hiring qualified employees. Independently train and evaluate performance to meet standards. Perform semi-annual evaluations.

Ensure custodial staff understand the school’s policies and procedures regarding expected employee conduct and performance through policy and procedure review, as well as any necessary corrective actions.

Manage custodial staff schedules, time off requests, and timecards daily. Be available after hours as needed to respond to custodial staff notices of late arrivals or absences. Rearrange schedules and assignments due to absences and planned leave as needed.

Establish and follow proper procedures for using chemicals and equipment. Train custodial staff and student workers accordingly to minimize job hazard exposure and injury.

Conduct weekly team meetings for the purpose of creating a cohesive unit that is informed of upcoming events and campus happenings, and training members on related safety topics and best practices.

Manage vendor contracts and services, negotiate purchases of various products and equipment, verify deliverables to ensure appropriate outcomes, and follow-up to rectify discrepancies in a timely manner.

Manage, track, and purchase custodial equipment, supplies, and consumables to maintain sufficient provisions and to aid in budgeting.

Perform all aspects of custodial duties daily and as needed in support of the departmental mission.

Remain competent and current by attending training and/or courses required by the direct supervisor.

Perform a wide variety of data entry, record retention, and reconciliations.

Process incoming facilities requests using FMX to ensure tasks are completed promptly and accurately.

Coordinate the collection and destruction of confidential records campus-wide.

Coordinate and maintain custodial equipment inventory database. Research and recommend new equipment purchases to improve efficiency, employee ergonomics, and quality of work.

Process department purchases, track, and reconcile budget and provide updates to supervisor upon request.

Assist with coordinating events on campus, including setup, table linen, clean-up, etc.

Develop institutional recycling plans and goals to minimize waste. Identify local recycling vendors to carry-out recycling plans to reduce costs.

Operate standard office equipment including computers, scanners, printers, copiers, telephones, and fax machines, and prepare outgoing mail per guidelines.

Create and format professional and accurate e-mails, letters, forms, spreadsheets, databases, and other documents using Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Practice attention to detail, problem solving skills, organization, and multi-tasking skills.

Demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, tact, and follow-through.

Use written and verbal skills to communicate effectively with employees, students, vendors, and visitors.

Use time management skills to prioritize daily duties.

Monitor building security by double checking doors and gates are locked and reporting suspicious activity.

Monitor safe working practices and safety programs for the purpose of ensuring efficient practices and promoting proper working habits. Identify, report, and correct safety concerns immediately.

Requires the ability to inspect the cleanliness of facilities. Must be able to move throughout assigned areas. Requires the ability to lift and carry custodial supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electric powered cleaning equipment. Medium work requiring prolonged or repeated use of hands and wrists, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, kneeling, and crouching.

Other duties as assigned.
