JOB SUMMARY
The job duties of the Forest Maintenance Technician include but are not limited to provide professional forestry tasks required to maintain quality experiences for recreational trail use by residents and tourist including prompt response to storm damage and debris; to ensure proper installation and maintenance of BMP's for water quality to minimize adverse environmental impacts of recreational trail use and timber harvesting operations; to support and augment the efforts of individual volunteers and user groups; and to provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to County residents and the general public.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The duties described below are indicative of what the Forest Maintenance Technician might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any county ordinances created for the position of Forest Maintenance Technician. This is not an exhaustive list of job responsibilities and therefore other duties may be assigned:


Administrative Functions:

  • Conduct annual recreational trail inspections to identify surface, corridor, signage, Best Management Practice for Water quality (BMP), and other maintenance needs. Report inspection results to County Forest Administrator and assist with developing annual maintenance plans.
  • Conduct routine, preventative, and light-corrective maintenance on recreational trails, including: signage, mowing, removal of deadfalls and limbs, brushing, chipping of woody debris, gravel spreading, grading, seeding and other maintenance activities.
  • Install and maintain BMP’s implemented as part of certified forest road, secondary forest access road, and recreational trail drainage systems and woods infrastructure used during timber harvesting operations.
  • Remove deadfalls and debris from road corridor and mow shoulders of certified county forest roads.
  • Conduct inspection, maintenance, and operation activities in wildlife impoundments within the county forest. Perform regular inspections to monitor buildup of debris within water control structures and auxiliary spillways and remove debris as-needed to maintain function of outlet and desired elevation of surface water.
  • Oversee, as assigned by the County Forest Administrator, trail maintenance and fish/wildlife habitat projects completed by individuals volunteering under the County Volunteer Policy, user-groups pursuant to Maintenance Agreements with the County, interns, and private contractors hired on a project basis.
  • Perform forestry related duties such as site preparation, tree planting, timber stand improvement, pruning, etc.


  • Monitor unauthorized use of motor vehicles within the county forest and, as assigned, tax deed properties. Install cables, gates, and embankments as necessary and coordinate the placement of rock barriers by private contractors.
  • Monitor county forest and trail systems for dumping. Notify County Forest Administrator of dumping. Clean up and properly dispose of refuse as assigned.
  • Conduct routine inspection and maintenance of boat launches within the county forest. Report unusual maintenance needs to County Forest Administrator.
  • Provide logistical support to user groups as assigned by the County Forest Administrator.
  • Mark property boundaries using GPS, as assigned by County Forest Administrator.
  • Assist with timber sale establishment as assigned by the County Forest Administrator.
  • Perform light construction, primarily relating to county forest and recreational trail signage and trailhead information stations.

  • Individual volunteers and members of 501(c)(3) conservation organizations that provide services to the Forest and Trails Division

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.


EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma required.
  • Two (2) years related work experience required.
  • Welding, metal fabrication, and construction experience preferred.
  • Class A CDL may be required within 6 months of hire.
  • A cell phone required.
