The Construction Manager (CM) is responsible for the operational oversight of active home construction, remodel, rehab, repair, warranty and warehouse projects in accordance with HFHDC goals and practices. This includes ensuring the safety of everyone on site, regardless of their status as a volunteer, contractor, employee or other, as well as meeting deadlines and budgets. The CM directly supervises Construction Site Superintendents and serves as a key resource for internal and external stakeholders.

Execute the Annual Construction Department Plan:

-Ensure HFHDC sites meet all safety & building regulations and work complies with company policies; communicate and enforce with staff, volunteers, and subcontractors.

-Oversee quality control and enforce accountability for maintaining project schedules; provide coaching and explore solutions, when necessary.

-Provide support for initiating each project including start-up details like scope of work, permit submission & design review, and worksite logistics.

-Submit timely material, supply and tool orders, including Gift-in-Kind products.

-Implement engagement and leadership plans for construction AmeriCorps members, volunteer house leaders, and general volunteers.

-Adjust schedules, expectations, and targets as organization needs or project financing parameters change.

-Provide support to Site Superintendents for navigating subcontractor, vendor and inspector relationships and processes.

-Communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors/vendors and HFHDC team members to update project progress, address concerns, and maintain positive working relationships.

-Provide on-site volunteer leadership, staff coaching, and construction labor as needed during group volunteer build days and special events.

-Navigate and respond to the effects of delays, poor weather or on-site incidents.

-Provide input into the design of cost-effective, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly homes that may be constructed with the maximum practical amount of volunteer labor.

-Share feedback to support the improvement of Construction department functions, processes and procedures.

-Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum 5 years of residential construction experience, including advanced knowledge of all phases of residential construction, the ability to read blueprints/house plans, diagnose and solve on-site challenges, plan several steps ahead, and teach others how to successfully complete construction tasks.

-Understand and appreciate the mission of HFHDC and willing to actively support the advancement and growth of the organization.

-Demonstrate outstanding leadership skills, including promoting organizational priorities, providing coaching/training to others on hard and soft skills, and working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.

-Demonstrate excellent project management skills, including a proven ability to navigate multiple, simultaneous projects and to work in a fast-paced team environment.

-Must be able to determine the appropriate tools/equipment for various construction tasks and utilize them according to safety guidelines.

-Communicate effectively (written and verbal) and deal tactfully with all kinds of individuals yet remain consistent in keeping a professional demeanor.

-Ability to instruct others on how to engage and supervise skilled and unskilled laborers in all facets of home construction.

-Comfort speaking in front of small groups.

-Strong problem-solving skills.

-Adherence to timelines, dependability, and an ability to work independently.

-Demonstrate excellent organizational skills and possess a strong attention to detail.

-Proficient and successful use of various technical programs for business/construction purposes including but not limited to Microsoft Office applications (including Teams) and Asana/Buildertrend/other build software.

-Minimum 5 years of residential construction experience required.

-Minimum 3 years of volunteer leadership or supervisory experience required.

-Requires a minimum of a four-year high school diploma or equivalent, Associate’s/Bachelor’s degree preferred.

-Driver’s license and clean record required.

-HFHI competent person training and/or OSHA 30 (or willingness to complete upon hiring).

-WI General Contractor’s License (or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hiring).

-Lead-Safe Renovator certification (favorable but not required).

This position will visit project sites and must be adaptable to extreme changes in weather (e.g., heat, cold, wind, rain, etc.) Must also be capable of lifting 60-80 pounds, bending/squatting, navigating uneven terrain, climbing ladders & scaffolds, and working from heights. Some sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. The work requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading.
