Join us.Job Summary:This role primarily serves as a welding engineer for welding development, fabrication, and tooling support in research and business units projects. The role develops and evaluates welding processes that meet or improve weld safety, quality, velocity, and cost. Business unit support includes development of weld quality plans, troubleshooting and root cause analysis, weld process or parameter development, or other joining related needs. The role contributes to maintaining joining related specifications, standards, and manufacturing practices.What You Will Do:Lead or contribute to welding, fabrication, and tooling development projectsCollaborate on multi-disciplinary technical assistance teams to provide superior welding process solutions.Collaborate with the Caterpillar welding community to develop and implement welding processesMentor less experience welding engineersKeep up to date on new technologies in the areas of joiningCommunicate welding process improvements to the Caterpillar welding communityEducation Requirement:A Bachelor degree in Welding Engineering, Welding Engineering TechnologyWhat Skills You Will Have:Accuracy and Attention to Detail:Accurately gauges the impact and cost of errors, omissions, and oversights.Utilizes specific approaches and tools for checking and cross-checking outputs.Learns from mistakes and applies lessons learned.Develops processes to ensure that information goes out error-free.Analytical Thinking:Experience in welding failure analysisApproaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue and determining its significance.Makes a systematic comparison of two or more alternative solutions.Uses flow charts, Pareto charts, fish diagrams, etc. to disclose meaningful data patterns.Uses logic and intuition to make inferences about the meaning of the data and arrive at conclusions.Decision Making and Critical Thinking:Applies an assigned technique for critical thinking in a decision-making process.Identifies, obtains, and organizes relevant data and ideas.Participates in documenting data, ideas, players, stakeholders, and processes.Recognizes, clarifies, and prioritizes concerns.Assists in assessing risks, benefits and consideration of alternatives.Effective Communications:Delivers helpful feedback that focuses on behaviors without offending the recipient.Listens to feedback without defensiveness and uses it for own communication effectiveness.Makes oral presentations and writes reports needed for own work.Avoids technical jargon when inappropriate.Looks for and considers non-verbal cues from individuals and groups.Technical Excellence:Provides effective technical solutions to routine functional challengesExperience in welding engineering or fabricationsExperience in creating welding procedures and processes, PQRs and WPSs.Experience reading prints and GD&TExperience with welding robot programmingExperience with welding process development and procedure qualificationApplies current procedures and technologies to help resolve technical issues in one's general area of technical competence.Helps others solve technical or procedural problems or issues.Manufacturing Standards, Procedures and Policies:Understanding of welding related standardsAbility to read and interpret specifications, standards and practicesObtains documentation and information on standards and their usage.Product Testing:American Welding Society Certified Welding InspectorExperience with non-destructive weld inspection methodsDevelops testing procedures; participates in selecting testing environment and tools.Troubleshooting Technical Problems:Documents common hardware, software and communications problems and likely resolutions.Troubleshoots typical technical problems in a specific area.Works with vendor-specific diagnostic guides, tools and utilities to discover application problems.Adheres to standard troubleshooting procedures to ensure effectiveness of resolutions.Participates in setting evaluation standards and criterion for troubleshooting.Additional InformationThe primary location for this position is Mossville, IL. Alternative locations are Decatur, IL, Athens, GA, Sanford, NC or S.
