DEFINITION
Under direct supervision of Program Supervisor, will lead education and life style functions of the environmental education school; lead and direct students in following the instructional program, and in maintaining a safe and secure facility; perform required clerical functions; do related work as directed. This position runs for the approximate duration of the school year. The program year generally operates between August – early June. Successful applicants must be able to live locally to the position located in Montaña de Oro State Park, Los Osos, CA.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Develop, teach and coordinate with other Naturalists a trail program, conduct trail walks for groups of students, develop, and operate non-trail activities; help develop resource material in subject areas related to overall program goals; maintain simple records; develop appropriate student behavior through positive reinforcement strategies and techniques; develop a variety of instructional materials and learning aids, including displays and exhibits; perform routine first aid and request assistance for non-routine injury and illness; maintain a clean, safe and secure facility; serve as liaison with participating school district personnel; drive a county owned vehicle in performance of duties; sing, tell stories and strive to make possible a positive memorable lifetime experience for all participants.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Basic concepts of child growth and development and developmental behavior characteristics;
- Student behavior management strategies and techniques;
- Background in environmental education, strong in thematic/concept/activity based programs;
- Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar;
- Basic arithmetical concepts;
- Routine record management.
Ability to:
- Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude toward students of varied age groups, including adults; in small as well as large group activities;
- Use a variety of learning materials and equipment;
- Communicate effectively in oral and written form;
- Apply first aid/CPR appropriately;
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions;
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults;
- Lift 50 pounds and move heavy materials;
- Carry a 25 pound backpack;
- Possess and maintain good physical and mental health and fitness;
- Walk/hike ten miles per day up and down narrow trails in hilly terrain;
- Conduct a clear vocal dialogue with students and staff and the ability to hear and understand normal speech from students and staff.
Experience:
- One year of experience with children and/or environmental education preferred.
Education:
- A BA or BS degree from an accredited college or university preferred or the completion of a BA or BS within one year of hire.
