Payroll Tech Needed

Position Overview

The Payroll Technician is responsible for accurately processing weekly, biweekly, and monthly payrolls for multiple business clients across a wide range of industries. This position requires precision, strong communication, strict confidentiality, and the ability to follow established workflows consistently. You will work closely with the Payroll Manager, internal bookkeeping teams, and clients to ensure payroll compliance, timely filings, and smooth payroll operations.

This is an in-office position.

Key Responsibilities

Process full-cycle payroll for multiple clients using Gusto, ADP, QuickBooks Payroll, or similar systems.

Review timesheets, earnings, deductions, PTO, leave, and reimbursements for accuracy.

Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local wage laws.

File quarterly and annual payroll tax filings (941, DE9/DE9C, W-2, 1099, etc.).

Maintain compliance with labor laws, wage orders, and industry-specific requirements.

Support clients with new hire reporting, garnishments, and payroll-related notices.

Communicate with clients professionally to gather missing information, resolve discrepancies, and clarify payroll instructions.

Collaborate with bookkeeping and tax team members on payroll adjustments, journal entries, and reconciliation items.

Maintain organized digital files in accordance with TreeStar’s file structure and naming conventions.

Follow established payroll SOPs and contribute to improving workflows and processes.

Track deadlines, due dates, and upcoming payroll cycles using internal project management systems.

Qualifications

1–2 years experience in payroll processing OR strong bookkeeping/accounting experience with a desire to specialize in payroll.

Excellent attention to detail with the ability to spot inconsistencies quickly.

Strong understanding of payroll calculations, wage & hour rules, and common payroll deductions.

Comfort with technology and accounting/payroll platforms.

Strong communication skills — written, verbal, and client-facing.

High level of integrity and ability to manage confidential information.

Preferred:

Experience with multi-client payroll or a payroll service bureau.

Familiarity with California wage laws.

Experience with certified payroll reporting (prevailing wage).

Experience with payroll software
