COMPENSATION: $15.00-$18.00 per hour, DOE
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Organic Vegetable Project (OVP) is a year-round, three-acre production unit at the Chico State University Farm. Its mission is to promote education, research, and production that models the best regenerative management practices promoting biological diversity, healthy soil, and nutritious, diverse vegetables. Its first crops were planted in spring, 2008. It sells its production to CSA members, the Wildcat Food Pantry, and other markets. The incumbent will be required to plan and manage all aspects of vegetable production. Will work closely with director to develop a production schedule and manage soil preparation, greenhouse seeding, transplanting, pest management, irrigation, and harvest. Will supervise student staff and community volunteers. Must have good people skills. Assist with research, workshops and work with student projects and Crops Club activities. This position requires a substantial knowledge and experience with vegetable production. It would also be helpful to have knowledge of management standards for certified organic production.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Must have a bachelors degree in agriculture or related field and be able to demonstrate the following qualifications:
Commercial vegetable production experience
Tractor and machine maintenance experience
Planning and record keeping skills for keeping track of crop rotations, timely planting of diverse vegetable crops, and documenting field activities, harvesting, and sales
Must possess a valid California Drivers License and good driving record
Participation in the DMV Employer Pull Notice Program (driving record) will be required upon hire
