Oracle Database and UNIX AdministratorType: Direct Hire (client will sponsor Visa holders)Kelly IT Resources has teamed up with a leading company that offers discrete manufacturing ERP software and solutions that enable small to large manufacturing companies, assembly operations and mixed-mode businesses to meet customers’ ever-increasing requirements for high-quality, on-time and on-budget production.BASIC PURPOSE:This position is responsible for creating and maintaining the Oracle databases used Accounting, Development, QA, and Customer Support Departments. This position is also responsible for maintaining and building all UNIX platforms (Solaris, Linux, etc.) including patches and middleware.In addition, this position participates in all required network administration related to the above platforms, troubleshooting and working with other team members to resolve issues related to database and operating system environments.In summary, we are looking for a candidate that meets the following criteria and is willing and able to do the following:
Prefer candidate knows Oracle over UNIX (Solaris) if don’t know both. Can ramp up on Solaris if needed. Role will eventually manage both areas.
Oracle DBA is primary position; UNIX (Solaris) is secondary.
Must be willing and able to work on areas outside Oracle and Solaris. Not looking for someone who is just looking to work in one area only.
Will work closely with Development and Release Engineering teams.
Oracle 8, 9, 10, 11 and cert on 18. Solaris 8 through Solaris 11.
May eventually be only Oracle DBA in El Segundo office and primary person but there’s Oracle DBA help in another office.
Small team (4-5) so variety of duties required – lots of different areas.
Position only supports internal departments – not a customer facing role.
Reports to: Manager, ITESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. Other duties may be assigned:This position will perform the following duties and responsibilities receiving general instructions on routine work and detailed instructions on new projects or assignments:
Performs day-to-day Administration tasks including such as Server O/S and database installation, configuration, troubleshooting and networking
Monitors system performance
Optimizes Unix Computing Environment via Tuning and Automation
Provides on-call and project support in a 24x7 work environment
Install and Configure Web Application Servers (Tomcat, Apache, etc.)
Performs a selective and/or full system backup and restores the system using standard backup procedures for Oracle and Unix
Assess Security Vulnerabilities and takes the appropriate actions to correct
Performs other Software Application Installs and Configuration
Effectively communicates equipment problems and solutions to management
Installs and upgrades hardware and software for a continuing stable environment
Assists in establishing and recommending policies on system use and services
Performs all required administrative functions necessary to the position including:
Timely submission of schedules, project status reports and other relevant correspondence
QualificationsESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:Education & Training:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, MIS or equivalent
Experience:
Minimum 2 years’ experience as an Oracle and Unix Systems Administrator within a (medium to large) data center environment
Specialized Knowledge & Skills:
Developing professional expertise in the following areas:
Demonstrated proficiency interpreting, maintaining, and creating shell and other common scripting language executables (C, Bourne, and Bash shell plus Perl and/or PHP). Having a full understanding in this area is a plus.
Experience with DNS, NIS+, NFS and Solaris security policies required. Having a full understanding in this area is a plus.
In-depth Knowledge of Network and Internet Security including Intrusion. Having a full understanding in this area is a plus.
Detection, Authentication Tools, Cryptography, and Encryption
Familiar with Raid and/or SAN’s
Familiar with source control tools such as CVS, Web servers such as Apache and Servlet Engines like Tomcat
Familiarity with fileserver protocols, networking, and communication systems
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including high degree of attention to detail and accurate processes
Excellent troubleshooting skills
Broad based background in IT technology, systems analysis and business applications
Ability to work on problems of moderate to diverse scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action. Able to demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions and able to resolve a wide range of issues in creative ways is a plus.
Self-motivated and ability to work independently or with a team receiving little instruction on day-to-day work and general instructions on new assignments is a plus.
Ability to manage multiple assigned projects working with internal groups
Excellent organizational skills, including ability to organize time and work on multiple tasks and follow through to completion of task or project
Excellent interpersonal skills, including communication
Ability to interact with all levels of personnel within the company. Able to network with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise is a plus.
Ability to be available for on-call resolutions
