The LA Conservation Corps is a private, non-profit organization that has been transforming the lives of at-risk youth in the Los Angeles area since 1986. With over 20,000 young people served through hands-on conservation work and education programs, the Corps is dedicated to developing tomorrow’s leaders while improving today’s communities.
We are currently seeking a Technical Construction Supervisor to join our mission-driven team. This position plays a vital role in supervising the construction of park, street, and facility improvement projects, while also teaching young adult corpsmembers construction skills that prepare them for successful careers in the industry. Reporting directly to the Program Manager, the Supervisor will foster a respectful and nurturing environment where corpsmembers grow through community service, technical training, and leadership development.
In this role, the Supervisor is responsible for developing detailed construction plans and schedules, monitoring the progress and quality of work, and ensuring the consistent and effective training of corpsmembers on construction sites. Training will cover a range of skills, including demolition, rough framing, roofing, drywall, finish carpentry, sheet metal, electrical, plumbing, painting, masonry, and the operation of equipment. The Supervisor will manage a crew of 10–14 young adults, overseeing all aspects of safety, site compliance, and project execution, while promoting teamwork, discipline, and positive morale.
The Technical Construction Supervisor also assists in the evaluation of corpsmembers' skills, helps develop project-based curricula, and maintains accurate project and training documentation. They will implement systems for tracking individual progress, assessing performance, and ensuring worksite safety through proper procedures and equipment use. A key component of the role is ensuring that the work produced meets professional construction standards and complies with all applicable codes, timelines, and design specifications.
Additional responsibilities include maintaining inventory of tools and supplies, overseeing worksite safety in line with OSHA and Corps standards, enforcing organization policies, and participating in regular team meetings. The Supervisor must be capable of interpreting and analyzing blueprints and construction documents, providing ‘as-built’ drawings when deviations occur, and serving as a technical liaison between the Corps and project sponsors, including city or county officials and inspectors.
The role also involves coordinating efforts with other YouthBuild staff for vocational counseling and leadership development, attending community events or meetings (including occasional weekends), and maintaining a visible, professional presence on behalf of the Corps. A high level of accountability and the ability to mentor and motivate young people from diverse backgrounds is critical.
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent (AA or Bachelor’s degree preferred), and at least six months of experience working with or training youth from various ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with construction tools and safety equipment, and possess the ability to manage crews, read construction documents, and deliver instruction on proper building techniques. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills are essential.
Additional requirements include a valid California Class C driver’s license with Passenger Endorsement (or the ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire), and a standard multi-media First Aid certification (also required within 90 days if not already held). Final candidates must pass a post-offer drug/alcohol screen, a fingerprint background check (Live Scan), and reference checks. Employment is contingent upon these clearances.
The compensation for this role ranges from $28.98 to $36.68 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. The Corps offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision coverage, vacation and sick time, and paid personal holidays. We also promote from within and support long-term career development.
