The University of California (UC) 4-H Youth Development Program offers learn-by-doing leadership opportunities to youth ages 5-19. This 4-H CES II bilingual in the Spanish language and bicultural position, under the direction of the Youth, Families and Communities (YFC) Advisor and County Director, will provide leadership, guidance, and coordination for the Humboldt County 4-H YPAR education and leadership program.

The YPAR program overall goal and objectives are to develop, pilot, and evaluate a culturally-responsive youth participatory action research (YPAR) program in six counties (Del Norte-Humboldt, Sonoma- Marin, and Santa Cruz-Monterey). The program will help improve the scientific literacy, positive youth development, and civic engagement of predominately Latino adolescent youth. The programmatic focus will be expanding access for Latino youth to meaningful science-related environmental issues (examples include climate change and sea-level rise, water quality and availability, renewable energy, food access, the built environment and access to natural ecosystems/parks)., and thus support them in utilizing scientific data to advocate for practices and/or policies meaningful in their communities. The applied research focus will be to identify key YPAR program elements that contribute to scientific literacy, improve indicators of youth development, expand access to civic engagement, and support community development.

The incumbent will be responsible for the coordination, management, and delivery of YPAR to community members through a combination of direct education and volunteer management. This includes development and delivery of the YPAR program; training, guiding, and supporting volunteer extenders with education information and resources; evaluating program implementation; collecting and compiling enrollment, documentation, and evaluation data from youth participants and volunteer extenders; and helping write reports in compliance with funding requirements.

Primary duties include:

YPAR leadership and assistance in helping the 4-H Advisors develop, deliver, and train others in the YPAR program; and attend county and across-county trainings and meetings.

Cultivate, establish, and maintain community relationships with high school and/or middle school youth, their families and personnel; and the community at-large.

YPAR program delivery to high school and/or middle school students once per week for approximately 28 weeks.

Manage YPAR program delivery & evaluation in collaboration with the County based 4-H Advisors.
