POSITION SUMMARY:

The Academic Tutor is responsible for providing academic math tutoring services in a high school setting, guiding and assisting students with homework, problem solving and test preparation. Providing quality classroom instruction in various math and related courses.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:

Understand, support and work toward achieving stated goals outlined in Gear Up grant.

Collaborates with teacher(s) to understand core mathematic concepts to support classroom instruction.

Handles skill based tutoring in Algebra I and II, Geometry and upper high school math courses.

Reviews course outlines, textbooks, and worksheets for assigned courses.

Facilitates instruction using alternative delivery methods; participates in assessment of student learning outcomes. Develops resources for students to build math skills.

Communicates student math progress; confers with teachers in a collaborative manner.

Tutors students individually or in scheduled group study sessions to review principles, solve problems, and review for tests. Provides counsel on math and test anxiety concerns.

Develops and maintains logbooks, spreadsheets or records of activities and services provided for reporting purposes.

Maintains, submits and meets deadlines or required paperwork in timely manner.

Reports to the assigned area on time, recognizing the importance of following a fast-paced schedule.

Interact and communicate in a supportive, courteous, respectful, and professional manner with individuals and groups of varying ages and cultural background

Attends meetings, trainings and events as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree in related field and one (1) year professional experience or internship in the mathematics field; or

Associates degree or two (2) years professional experience in mathematics

Skills in listening to issues, synthesizing information, and reaching sound conclusions.

Ability to assess and understand learning styles.

Ability to relate to a diverse population and maintain composure when faced with difficult situations.
