Job Title: Health Promotion & Education Technician

Location: Potawot Health Village, Arcata, CA

Shift: Full Time

Assists tribal and American Indian communities with health promotion and disease prevention activities which will mobilize them to become involved in their communities by performing the following duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Assists in communicating health education needs, concerns and resources.

• Assists in determining appropriate focus for health education in cooperation with local American Indian community members, tribal programs, and professional and paraprofessional health clinic staff.

• Assists in planning and implementing health promotion activities in response to designated needs through interpreting social factors pertinent to development of program.

• Utilizes community resources to assist in development of organizing community meetings and events.

• Available as a resource for health education and to assist in coordinating activities with other program staff.

• Assists in the coordination of health promotion activities, including networking with other federal, state and local programs.

• Promotes health careers to American Indians.

• Assists with development and presentation of material and information to staff, Board of Directors, tribal organizations, and outside agencies.

• Uses culturally specific materials (written or media) as a priority.

• Attend department meetings and other meetings as assigned.

• Adheres to accreditation and compliance standards/guidelines.

• Maintains a professional, organized, clean working environment by following organizational policies, guidelines, and safety standards.

• Assist in the development of departmental policy, procedures, and quality improvement activities within the clinic as directed.

Level II - In addition to the above also:

• Participates in evaluation of impact and effectiveness of health promotion activities.

• Interprets cross-cultural information to explain differences and similarities in behavior, attitudes, and practices of American Indians to other health professional staff.

• Assists with development, selection and distribution of culturally specific health education materials utilizing established evaluation methodologies.

• Develops the coordination of health promotion activities, including networking with other federal, state and local programs.

• Responsible for organizing meetings with community groups of American Indians by contacting tribal organizations and conducting activities which will enhance local decision making skills.

• Assists in completing all reports and gathering information and data required by supervisor.

Level III - In addition to the above also:

• Plans and implements health promotion activities in response to designated needs through interpreting social factors pertinent to development of program.

• Evaluates the impact and effectiveness of health promotion activities.

• Develops, selects and distributes culturally specific health education materials utilizing established evaluation methodologies.

• Develops and presents material and information to staff, Board of Directors, tribal organizations, and outside agencies.

• Completes all reports and gathers information and data required by supervisor.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Educational degrees must be from a US Department of Education accredited school

Level I:

• High school diploma or equivalent and one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Level II:

• High school diploma or equivalent and three years related experience and/or training; or some related college level courses and two years equivalent combination of education and/or experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Level III:

• Associate's degree (A. A.) in health related field or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or high school diploma or equivalent, and five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
