The Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy construction equipment used in asphalt paving, grading, and site development projects. This position plays a critical role in supporting daily operations by operating machinery to meet project specifications, maintaining equipment in compliance with company and regulatory standards, and assisting with general labor tasks when required.
Responsibilities:
Safely operate equipment such as loaders, backhoes, graders, pavers, rollers, skid steers, and other paving/construction equipment.
Maintain equipment cleanliness, report malfunctions, and coordinate with Shop Manager for timely repairs.
Interpret and follow grade stakes, markings, and directions from Foreman to achieve required specifications.
Load, move, and place construction materials (aggregate, asphalt, dirt, etc.) as directed.
Adhere to all company safety policies, traffic control procedures, and PPE requirements.
Assist with other job tasks assigned by foreman when not operating equipment.
Communicate effectively with crew members to coordinate safe and productive operations.
Qualifications:
Experience: Minimum 2 years of equipment operating experience in paving, grading, or heavy construction.
Licenses/Certifications:
o Valid California Driver’s License; Class A CDL preferred but not required.
o OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.
o Equipment Operator training/certification a plus.
Skills:
o Ability to read construction plans, grades, and elevations.
o Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
o Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to sit, stand, and operate heavy equipment for extended periods.
Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds as needed.
Work in outdoor environments with exposure to heat, cold, dust, noise, and uneven terrain.
Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, nights, and weekends depending on project needs.
Working Conditions:
This position is performed in a construction environment with frequent exposure to moving equipment, traffic, and outdoor elements. The Equipment Operator must maintain awareness of surroundings at all times and comply with all safety procedures.
