The Seal Coat Applicator and Hot Crack Fill Technician is responsible for preparing, applying, and finishing pavement preservation treatments, including asphalt seal coating and hot rubberized crack sealing. This role ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and to project specifications while upholding National Paving Company’s quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Safely operate equipment such as seal coat spray rigs, squeegees, blowers, crack seal kettles, and hand tools.
Prepare surfaces by cleaning, edging, and removing debris prior to application.
Apply seal coat material evenly by hand or spray application in accordance with project requirements.
Operate and maintain hot crack fill equipment, ensuring material is heated, applied, and finished properly.
Monitor material temperatures and viscosity to ensure proper installation.
Follow traffic control and work zone safety procedures at all times.
Perform daily inspections and routine maintenance of assigned equipment.
Accurately measure and mix materials, keeping detailed records of usage and job logs.
Assist with general paving crew tasks as directed by Foreman or Supervisor.
Maintain safe and clean work areas while adhering to company, DOT, and Cal/OSHA requirements.
Qualifications:
Experience: Minimum 1–2 years of experience in asphalt maintenance, seal coat application, or hot crack filling preferred (will train the right candidate).
Licenses/Certifications:
o Valid California Driver’s License required; Class A CDL a plus.
o OSHA 10 or 30 certification preferred.
o Flagger or traffic control training a plus.
Knowledge/Skills:
o Understanding of pavement maintenance methods and material handling.
o Ability to safely operate and maintain seal coat and crack fill equipment.
o Strong attention to detail and quality workmanship.
o Team-oriented with good communication skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and use hand tools for extended periods.
Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds regularly.
Work in outdoor environments with exposure to heat, cold, dust, fumes, and asphalt materials.
Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, nights, and weekends, depending on project needs.
Working Conditions:
This position is performed outdoors on active job sites with frequent exposure to traffic, moving equipment, and varying weather conditions. Strict adherence to PPE and safety protocols is required.
