Legal Assistant/ Law Clerk (Part-time in person)

Job Description:

Shawky Law is a small criminal defense firm in Pasadena, California. We are looking for a candidate who will consistently provide the highest level of customer service and professionalism to clients who have often been marginalized and prejudged by the legal system. The firm is seeking an in-person part-time legal assistant/law clerk. This position is perfect for recent college graduates seeking legal experience, and the opportunity to work directly with a criminal defense attorney. The part time position ranges from about 15 to 30 hours per week with an hourly pay rate of $16 - $20 dependent on qualifications. Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution (preferred), a current university student, or experience in an office/legal environment.

- A good candidate is skilled in research, strong in reading and writing, well organized, and pays careful attention to detail.

- Required written and verbal communication skills and fluency in English.

- Fluency/proficiency in another language including Spanish, Mandarin, or Arabic is highly preferred, but not required.

- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite Programs.

- Flexible part-time schedule/working days to accommodate attorney’s court schedule.

- Reliable transportation to and from the office location (in Pasadena).

Responsibilities:

- Provide timely updates on case developments through phone calls with courts and attorney staff.

- Assist with preparing court documents including drafting and formatting defense motions.

- Conduct legal and other research to assist with trial and court hearings.

- Organize and compile case documents, review body worn footage, analyze police reports and witness statements for clients.

- Provide direct clerical support on individual cases, including note taking phone calls and in person meetings.

- Maintain communication with clients and with the prosecutor’s offices

- Conduct client intake, case management, scheduling, and filling out subpoena documents.
