Description

The Registered Professional Forester (RPF) is responsible for the management of public and private forest lands for economic, recreational, and conservation purposes. The RPF coordinates teams of Environmental Technicians, Analysts, and Scientists on a broad range of forestry projects including forest inventories, timber appraisals, conservation easements, and forest land development. The RPF negotiates the purchase of and develops contracts for timber sales, administers active logging projects, and ensures work is completed to set timescales and within project budgets. The RPF manages all phases of forestry projects and reviews and authorizes the submission of deliverables/products to clients and agencies.

Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with the California Forest Practice Rules as well as applicable California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) Fish and Game Code (FGC), State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) orders and regulations, and CGS.

Timber Harvest Plan (THP) and Non-Industrial Timber Management Plan (NTMP) design, layout, and writing.

Plan and supervise forestry projects, such as determining the type, number and species of trees to be planted, thinning stands and monitoring growth of timber stands.

Silvicultural design of various multi-aged forest types including a comprehensive re-entry schedule.

Supervise THP layout and timber marking of forestry Technicians and seasonal Technicians.

Determination of logging system to be used to maximize profit as well as minimize erosion and environmental degradation.

Monitor contract compliance and results of forestry activities to assure adherence to the Forest Practice Rules.

Timber cruise design and implementation. Prepare reports and recommendations.

Prepare sustained yield plans by interpreting cruise data and stand tables.

Determine methods to minimize and or mitigate environmental impacts of forestry operations.

Road Layout and Watercourse crossing engineering.

Watercourse classification and design of protection measures

Stand delineation and determination of economic viability of potential harvest.

Survey for archaeological resources and develop reports.

Manage forestry operations and monitor environmental impacts of forestry operations

Plan natural resources conservation or restoration programs.

Direct, and participate in, forest fire suppression activities

Advise others about environmental management and conservation

Timber harvest administration.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

Operation of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs and 4WD vehicles)

Operation of hand tools (chain saw, clinometer, compass, loggers tape)

BAF Tools (prisms, cruising crutch, cruise-all)

Hypsometer (laser rangefinder, ultra-sonic)

Inventory management software (Forsee)

Map creation (Google Earth and ESRI ArcGIS)

Mobile mapping (tablet computer, external GPS, mobile mapping software)

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Experience with Gmail and Google Calendar

Education and Experience

Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in forestry or closely related field. Must be a Registered Professional Forester (RPF) in good standing.
