Peacock Acres Youth Support Counselors are full-time or part-time staff that provide a safe and therapeutic environment for foster youth living in a Short Term Residential Therapeutic Program (STRTP). Counselors oversee the facility and the well-being of the residents under the direction of the Facility Manager.

Expectations:

All Youth Support Counselors are to attend regular trainings provided by qualified Peacock Acres staff or qualified outside providers. Counselors must properly submit timely written reports regarding unresolved problem behavior occurring during shift and record all daily activity in the log book. Counselors are to notify the STRTP Facility Managers and/or Administrators of any conflict incidents, disciplinary actions, school suspensions or announcements, and resident medical/dental appointments.

Before transporting any residents the Resident Transport and Mileage Log must be filled out entirely. All activities entailing foster youth must be approved by the Facility Manager. If any residents are to remain home instead of attending a group outing one Youth Support Counselor must remain home with him or her. Counselors are to be present at all community outings during shift and must not leave any children unattended in a store or vehicle.

Reports to: STRTP Facility Manager

Responsibilities:

1. Provide parental quality supervision and guidance to youth at the facility.

2. Supervise and interact with the residents and encourage socially acceptable behavior in all situations that include in house and in the community.

3. Review the schedule for the day and run basic routines-prep for meals, laundry, review log book, room checks, chores, driving, etc.

4. Implement and create recreational activities for the residents during shift.

5. Transport residents to various functions such as school, family visits, doctor appointments, counseling sessions, TLC, Peacock Acres main office, recreational events and/or practices, and employment.

6. Prepare meals and snacks for residents during shift.

7. Be able to intervene during crisis situations and make appropriate decisions.

8. Provide conflict resolution with residents and be able to implement Peacock Acres Emergency Intervention Plan and/or call 911 in case of an emergency.

9. Supervise well-being of residents.

10. Administrate discipline and set limits for appropriate behavior.

11. Initiate recreational activities for residents during their shift.

12. Report to STRTP Facility Manager and/or Head of Service (Clinical Director) the identification of any additional needs or services for particular residents.

13. Be available for any added assignments or unexpected events such as driving for other programs, hospitals trips, etc.

14. Communicate with peers and management team regarding residents behavior and needs.

15. Contribute to progress notes about STRTP residents.

16. Assure cleanliness, appearance and maintenance of the facility and surrounding grounds.

Qualifications:

o Bachelors degree

o 1-2 years residential experience preferred

o 1-2 years experience working with gender and age group of facility preferred

o Must be able to exercise good judgement and to handle confidential issues

o Ability to de-escalate potentially stressful situations

o Moderate cooking skills

o Adaptable/flexible

o Self-motivated and willing to take initiative

Additional Requirements:

o Satisfy the Department of Social Services and Department of Justice finger print clearance requirements

o Possess a valid California Drivers License and have access to a reliable and insured vehicle

o Have a clean DMV printout

o Have negative T.B. Test

o Current First Aid/CPR certification
