Job Description: Driver, Part-Time

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Driver personnel should have experience in the area of group home or program-related adult supervision and/or some education in related fields; psychology, chemical dependency counseling, etc.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Drives assigned vehicles to safely transport clients and staff to appointments, special events and recreational activities; and to pick up or deliver mail, equipment, supplies or clothing donations.

Monitors client behavior during transport, maintains order in vehicle, ensures safety of passengers, and assists passengers in and out of the vehicle as needed. Reports incidents or inappropriate behaviors to appropriate treatment team members.

Schedules and coordinates transportation needs by planning and prioritizing trips in cooperation with treatment team members. Reads and interprets maps and driving directions to ensure clients are transported and errands are completed in an efficient and punctual manner.

Performs daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure vehicle is in safe driving condition. Addresses unsafe vehicle conditions with supervisor immediately to ensure issues are corrected in a timely fashion.

Complies with all traffic laws and immediately reports incidents or accidents to supervisor and necessary law enforcement and/or medical emergency authorities.

Maintains log of mileage, destinations, passenger roster, pick-up and delivery times and any incident or accident reports.

Fuels and cleans vehicle interior and exterior and performs minor maintenance when necessary including, but not limited to, checking engine oil, transmission, anti-freeze or window washing fluids; ensuring tire and water pressure are correct. Coordinates the schedule for major or periodic vehicle maintenance with management and staff to minimize service interruptions.

May perform a variety of related office duties as necessary such as answering telephones, relaying messages, responding to transportation inquiries or photocopying and faxing documents.

May provide client monitoring by ensuring client safety, supervising therapeutic, recreational or daily activities, monitoring client behaviors, and taking census counts. Reports missing residents, unusual behaviors, or physical symptoms to the appropriate personnel.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Ability to read, write, understand and follow written instructions in order to read maps and signs, interpret driving directions, keep logs of mileage and vehicle maintenance and to document incidents and occurrences at a level normally acquired through completion of high school diploma or equivalency.

Ability to operate a multi-passenger motor vehicle safely and efficiently, provide transportation services and perform vehicle maintenance at a level normally acquired through two to three years of related experience.

Current valid drivers license in state of hire required. Must be at least 21 years of age, and possess and maintain a safe driving record for the past 2 years. May be required to maintain a Class C drivers license to operate multi-passenger vans.

Interpersonal skills necessary to exchange information and professionally interact with clients, treatment team and community sources as necessary.

Analytical skills necessary to understand and comply with traffic laws, drive defensively and observe clients and report relevant behaviors and interactions to treatment team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to drive an automobile and van, remain alert to traffic conditions, and to identify and comply with traffic signals and signs.

Ability to speak with others in order to exchange information and provide counseling support.

Ability to record and proofread information on forms and charts.

Ability to respond to telephones and pages and hear speech.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Clinical Director or designee.

Has no responsibility for leading or supervising the work of others.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Regularly exposed to hazards of driving, but potential for harm is limited if safe vehicle operation procedures are followed.

Works in a normal office where there are relatively few discomforts due to dust, dirt, noise and the like.
